UCM Athletics Announces Staff Reorganization and Executive Team

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Missouri Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recently completed an administrative reorganization and identified a new leadership team, UCM Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Matt Howdeshell announced on August 3, 2023. With a goal of prioritizing growth within the department, and strengthening organizational structure, the new Executive Team currently consists of:
  • Jeff Mason, Associate Athletic Director for External Relations
  • Crystal Westphal, Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations and Senior Woman Administrator
  • Scott Thomason, Associate Athletic Director for Facilities
"You win with people first, and University of Central Missouri Athletics is a special place, full of special people," Howdeshell said. "This allows us to maximize our team's strengths, be more efficient, and get more done. The organizational structure along with our new communication structure will set us up for continued success now, and into the future."

As the new Associate Athletic Director for External Relations, Mason will oversee the development, athletic communications, creative content, marketing, sponsorship and promotions, ticketing and licensing and trademarks areas. He will also be the sport administrator for the Mules and Jennies golf teams as well as the Jennies volleyball team. Mason has been with UCM Athletics since 2013 and previously served as an Assistant Athletic Director for External Operations before being promoted.

The Associate Athletic Director for Business Operations and Senior Woman Administrator, Westphal will oversee the financial services and human resources area and serve as the sport administrator for Jennies soccer, Jennies basketball, and Jennies bowling. In addition, Westphal will provide oversight of the UCM Cheer Team and Mulekickers dance team. She has been with Central Missouri since 2012 and was previously the Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations before being promoted.

Thomason, the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities, will oversee all facilities operations for UCM Athletics and serve as the sport administrator for Mules baseball, Mules wrestling and Jennies softball. He has been with UCM Athletics since 2009 and was the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities prior to being promoted.

An opening on the Executive Team is the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics position. The vacancy was created when Syed Moinuddin resigned from the position on July 28 due to personal reasons.

"We are moving forward with a thorough and national search to identify a replacement for this key position," Howdeshell said. "We will find the right candidate to serve our student-athletes and coaches at the highest level."
