ELKINS, W.Va. -- Former Davis & Elkins player and assistant coach, Patrick Smith has been named Interim Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Golf Teams by Director of Athletics, Patrick Snively.

"We are excited to bring Coach Smith on full-time," said Snively. "He was a very good player and leader for D&E as and undergrad and when he came back as an assistant coach, he brought with him a level of maturity and great work ethic as he split time between the team and working in the business office. It is great to have him devoting his time entirely to the team and having an alum in the role is extra special."

Smith attended D&E as an undergraduate and played golf for coaches JD Lamm and Alasdair Forsythe. The Beckley, West Virginia native enjoyed several top-ten finishes as a freshman, including a low round of 67 (-5) in the Great Midwest Conference Fall Tournament where he placed fifth overall. Smith grew as a golfer under the tutelage of Lamm and Forsythe and helped the Senators to several team victories and high finishes. He was named All-Mountain East Conference Second Team during his sophomore season. In his senior season, he had the opportunity to play in the NCAA Regional for the first time and qualified for the National Championships with his team.

"As a former player and alum, it is a great honor to be named the interim head coach of the men's and women's golf teams," said Smith. "I am thankful to have the opportunity to lead these programs. As a new coach, I will use this promising opportunity to learn the necessary skills to continue past success within both teams. I am thankful for the opportunity Pat Snively and the athletic department has given me. I want to keep the Senators in the forefront of the MEC and the region. I look forward to the leadership of our returning players as we welcome our incoming freshmen. I am surrounded by great people her at Davis & Elkins and I'm looking forward to working alongside them. I want my players to have a great college experience, while working hard on the course and in the classroom and I look forward to connecting with alumni and keeping them updated on the accomplishments of the programs."
