Stony Brook Athletics Celebrates Record Fundraising Year

8/10/2023 1:52:00 PM

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook Athletics celebrated a record fundraising year which saw the department raise over $7.3 million ($7,382,464) in cash and pledges for the 2023 fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023.

"It is impossible to overstate the importance of fundraising and the impact that it has on our current and future success. I am beyond grateful for the generosity of our supporters who responded to the call over the past year. The momentum going into our second year in the CAA is gaining steam, and the increased financial investment only strengthens our ability to positively impact the lives of our Stony Brook student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron.

This year's record-breaking effort tops the previous two department highs of $5.988 million in the 2016 fiscal year and $4.768 million in the 2011 fiscal year.

Gifts that were made this year touch every corner of the department, including:
  • Installation of a new video board and score board in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium
  • Renovations to Joe Nathan Field and University Field
  • Improvements at University Pool
  • The construction of a new Athletic Department Film Room
  • Providing student-athletes with Alston-related academic achievement benefits
  • Renovations to the Indoor Sports Complex
  • Over $500,000 in unrestricted operating support
This year, Stony Brook Athletics received a pair of transformational gifts. The first came in August 2022, a $3 million gift from the Kehoe Family Foundation to support comprehensive excellence within the Department of Athletics.

In March, the department secured an anonymous $2.5 million matching gift to revitalize the baseball and softball complex. The same family also provided an additional $500,000 in support for the Stony Brook basketball program and their individual athletes' and programmatic needs, including academic incentive awards for student-athletes, team travel and meal costs, and recruiting.

In addition, the department received eight major gift commitments at the Ramsey Leadership Society level. The Ramsey Leadership Society launched in May 2022, and currently recognizes 24 of the Seawolves' most ardent and generous supporters.

During the 2023 fiscal year, Stony Brook Athletics celebrated its strongest Giving Day to date this year, raising over $137,000 from 402 donors. Including several generous Giving Day matches and challenges, Giving Day resulted in over $330,000 in philanthropic support generated for Stony Brook Athletics.
