Alex Calder Named Head Field Hockey Coach

Calder joins WAC from Gwynedd Mercy University.

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington College Athletic Director Thad Moore has named Alex Calder as the new head coach for Washington College Field Hockey.

"Alex stood out in a very competitive pool of candidates," said Moore. "Her vision for our program and desire to get back to her liberal arts roots spoke volumes during the hiring process.  She has a very astute field hockey mind and is familiar with the Centennial Conference.  She is committed to providing an outstanding and well-rounded student-athlete experience.  We couldn't be happier having her take over as our head coach and continue to move the program forward."

"I am so excited to be joining the Washington College Athletic community!" Said Calder. "I want to thank Athletic Director Thad Moore, Kim Lessard and Alisha Mosley along with the entire search committee for this opportunity. Everyone made me feel immediately welcome on campus and that is a testament to the culture. I am excited to continue to grow upon the success of this team and cannot wait to get started here in a few weeks."

Calder joins Washington College from Gwynedd Mercy University, where she served as the head coach since 2020. In her first full season at the helm in 2021, Calder guided the Griffins to the semifinals of the Atlantic East Conference tournament. The Griffins would make it back-to-back with another appearance at the AEC Tournament this past season.

Under Calder, the Griffins received two NFHCA All-Region picks, three first team All-AEC selections and a pair of second team nods. The team was also consistently recognized by the NFHCA for its academic achievements with dozens of All-Academic awards and one team award designation.

Calder played collegiately at Gettysburg for four years as a midfielder. She would captain the Bullets during her senior season. After graduating from Gettysburg with an English degree, Calder served as a graduate assistant coach at St. Lawrence University. She completed her master's degree in educational leadership before taking over at Gwynedd Mercy in 2020.
