Baker Announces Promotion of Senior Administrators Betz, Long

Betz Promoted to Associate AD, Long Elevated to Assistant AD

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Associate Vice Provost and Director of Athletics & Recreation Jennifer S. Baker announced the promotion of Nikki Betz and Erin Long to Associate Director and Assistant Director of Athletics, respectively, effective July 1, 2023.  Both are currently members of Baker's senior administrative team; in their new roles, both retain a majority of their previous responsibilities while adding additional administrative oversight.

Betz will serve as the Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Leadership and Performance and she will continue in her role as the department's Senior Woman Administrator.  She will serve as the sport administrator for the highly successful Blue Jay field hockey and women's basketball programs with oversight of head coaches and assistant coaches for two teams with more than 50 combined student-athletes.  She will play an active role with each team in budget development, fundraising, competition scheduling and rules education.

Betz was named Johns Hopkins' Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Leadership & Development in August 2022 after originally arriving at Johns Hopkins in November 2021 as the Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics.

In her expanded role as an Associate AD, Betz will have oversight of the Assistant AD of Sport Performance & Wellness along with the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Mental Health and Performance, overseeing the full expanse of student-athlete leadership development and sport performance initiatives within the department.

Betz has also worked closely with the game operations team and was a key member of Johns Hopkins' administrative team that operated the highly successful 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships at Homewood Field. She is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and earned her MBA from Johns Hopkins' Carey Business School.

Long assumes the title of Assistant Director of Athletics for Sport Performance & Wellness and Head Athletic Trainer.  She will continue to serve in a clinical role as the athletic trainer for the nationally-ranked Blue Jay volleyball team while leading a team of eight full time certified athletic trainers who provide care for Johns Hopkins' 24 varsity athletic teams and more than 650 student-athletes.

Under Long's direction, the Sport Performance area also includes four full time strength and conditioning coaches. In addition to leading a robust staff of more than a dozen, Long will take on additional administrative responsibilities as the Assistant Director of Athletics, including working with Betz on several Student-Athlete Leadership and Development initiatives.

Long is a graduate of Salisbury University and earned her master's degree in health administration from Towson University.  She arrived at Johns Hopkins in 2006 as a graduate assistant athletic trainer before joining the staff in a full time role in 2008 as an assistant athletic trainer.  She was promoted to associate athletic trainer in 2009 and was later promoted to Director of Sport Performance and Wellness in 2019, when she joined Baker's senior staff.

Long is a Maryland licensed and BOC certified athletic trainer.  She also received an Executive Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and Management in 2017 from Johns Hopkins' Carey Business School.
