Nelson steps down as Director of Athletics, Capone named Interim Director of Athletics

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - After serving three years as the Athletic Director, in addition to her role as Dean of Students, Dr. Suzanne Nelson has stepped down as Director of Athletics. As Director of Athletics, she directed the athletic department to the greatest stretch in the program's history. The athletic department won four team championships, two individual cross country championships, six player of the years, multiple rookie of the years, and saw roster numbers increase in several sports. Nelson served on the executive committee, the merger implementation committee for the CSAC, and spearheaded COVID-19 policies.

President Eric Carswell said, "I'm deeply grateful for her commitment and the many hours each week she has committed to serving our student athletes and their coaches. I know it has been a labor of love for her."

Stepping into the role as Interim Director of Athletics is Sal Capone. He will be reporting to the Dean of Students, Dr. Suzanne Nelson.

Sal has been a part of the Bryn Athyn athletic department for the last five years, where he served as Head Athletic Trainer, and more recently Assistant Athletic Director for Strength and Conditioning. In conjunction with the Health and Wellness Center, he was involved in the athletic department's pandemic response and the CSAC Return to Play Protocol. 

Capone is a 1999 graduate of West Chester University where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.  He earned his Master of Science in Sports Management in 2009 from the California University of Pennsylvania. 

During his career, Capone has gained over 20 years of NCAA experience at the Division I and III level while performing the duties of Assistant Athletic Trainer, Head Athletic Trainer, and Strength Coach.  He has also implemented and developed the Sports Medicine and Strength program for the former NAHL team in Philadelphia from 2015-2018. 

During his personal time, Capone has served as Vice President of the Board of Directors for Washington Township Hockey Club and worked as Director of Conditioning for the Philadelphia Little Flyers Youth Hockey.  He is USA Hockey Level 4 Coach and currently coaches at the 14 U level for the Hollydell Hurricanes. 

He resides in New Jersey with his wife MaryAnna and two children, Angelina, and Santino.
