Lee McCoy Named Director of Golf

McCoy will take charge of Columbus State's men's and women's golf teams.

COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University Athletics Department announced the hiring of Lee McCoy as the Director of Golf on Friday, June 30. As the Director of Golf, McCoy will serve as the head coach of the CSU men's and women's golf programs.

"As good as our CSU golf programs have been throughout the years, I think we've hit a hole-in-one with the hiring of Lee McCoy as Director of Golf," said Interim Director of Athletics Jay Sparks. "He has great knowledge, great energy, a technical mind that is second to none; all characteristics which will impact our golf programs immediately."

A native of Dunedin, Fla., McCoy comes to Columbus with a prestige golf resume. He began his collegiate career in 2013 as a student-athlete on the men's golf team at the University of Georgia. As a Bulldog, he posted seven individual wins, was named the 2016 SEC Player of the Year, tabbed a three-time All-American and holds UGA's record for the lowest career scoring average. McCoy also was the 2016 Haskins Award Runner-Up and was a member of the 2015 Walker Cup and the 2015 Palmer Cup.

"I am truly honored to begin my career in collegiate coaching at CSU. The state of Georgia means the world to me, and the city of Columbus already feels like home," said McCoy. "I feel privileged to be a part of a golf program that has a record of being extremely competitive and am blessed to have access to a phenomenal private practice facility, as well as fantastic golf courses. I am fortunate to inherit a talented roster from Coach McMinn and look forward to helping the players reach their potential."

McCoy departed from UGA in 2016 to pursue a professional golf career for four years. He was the winner of the PGA Tour Canada in 2016 and the 2017 Q-School Finals. McCoy played two full seasons on the Korn Terry Tour and his best finish was tied for third. He competed in 13 PGA Tour events with his best finish being fourth.

After pursuing his professional career, McCoy returned to UGA in 2022 to finish his degree in housing management and policy, completing it in Spring 2023. Not only was he finishing school, but McCoy also served as a Student Assistant Coach for the Bulldogs for the 2022-23 season and was the Director of Online Instruction at Sub 70 Golf.

"The competitive nature that fueled me to succeed as a student-athlete is still very much intact and is what drove me to a career in college coaching," stated McCoy. "I strongly believe that CSU has the tools and support to become a dominant force in Division II. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to use my experience as a player to help student-athletes reach their potential on the course and in life."

McCoy is married to his wife, Amanda, and has a two-year-old daughter, Lily.
