Alexander Joins Commodores Coaching Staff

Cameia Alexander has been named women’s assistant coach for Vanderbilt track and field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Director of Vanderbilt cross country and track and field Althea Thomas announced the hiring of Cameia Alexander as women’s assistant track coach on Friday.

“Coach Cameia is a young, budding superstar in the track and field coaching world. She brings a lot of experience as a head coach, meet director and DIII championship committee member,” Thomas said. “Her knowledge of the sport, coupled with her experience developing athletes to elite performances, will prove to be a great asset to our program and the championship experience we work relentlessly to provide.”

Alexander joins the Commodores after spending the last three seasons at Virginia Wesleyan University where she was director of cross country and track and field from 2021 to 2023. From 2020 to 2021, she was the assistant director of sprints, jumps and hurdles.

During the 2022-23 season, Alexander coached six USTFCCCA All-Region athletes, nine indoor and outdoor Old Dominion Athletic Conference champions and eight-time All-American Geni Roberts. Roberts was the runner-up in the long jump at the NCAA DIII Indoor Track and Field Championships and third in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. At the 2023 ODAC Indoor Championships, Alexander led the men’s team to a fourth-place finish and the women’s team to sixth overall.

Over the course of three seasons with the Marlins, Alexander coached student-athletes to achieving 25 school records, 24 ODAC individual titles, three ODAC all-time records and 20 All-Region and seven All-America honors.

“I am so excited for the opportunity to join a prestigious academic university such as Vanderbilt. The achievements by Coach Althea Thomas and her staff have been recognized across the sport, on both the national and international levels,” Alexander said. “I am also thrilled and thankful to be mentored by one of the most well-respected female coaches in the country. I am eager to contribute to the success that this staff has achieved in the SEC, as well as the NCAA.”

Before her stop in Virginia Beach, Alexander spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Troy University where she worked with the sprinters and hurdlers. There, she coached four Sun Belt Conference champions and 10 NCAA East Region qualifiers.

Alexander earned a bachelor’s degree in health and human services from Troy in 2016 and her master’s in clinical and mental health psychology with a rehabilitation counseling certificate in 2019. As a student-athlete, she competed in the 60, 100 and 200 meters and sprint relays.
