Sarah Richardson Named Head Softball Coach

STORM LAKE, Iowa (June 27, 2023) – Buena Vista University Director of Athletics, Scott Brown, has announced that Sarah Richardson will take over as the University's new head softball coach, effective immediately.

"Sarah is highly regarded in the softball community and has done a great job recruiting locally, regionally, and nationally," says Brown. "I am excited for the future of BVU Softball."

Richardson joined the program as an assistant coach last summer and moved into the role of interim head coach in December. This past spring, she coached a Second Team All-Conference selection, five Academic All-Conference selections, as well as four Academic All-District players.

Moving forward, Richardson is extremely excited about building on the success of recent years.

"I'm very excited for the opportunities that BVU has provided me and all the support I have received," she says. "I'm looking forward to putting my own spin on a program that has had success in the past! We have a great group, and I can't wait to see what we can do moving forward!"

Richardson came to BVU after spending the 2021-22 academic year as an assistant softball coach at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo.  Prior to that, she spent nearly seven years as a private softball instructor in Evansville, Ind., where she worked with younger individuals to teach the proper mechanics of various positions.  Richardson also spent one season (2013) as a volunteer coach with the University of Evansville.

A prep standout at Okemos High School in Lansing, Michigan, Richardson went on to finish a stellar collegiate career at the University of Evansville.  During her prep playing days, she compiled a 0.53 ERA, tallied a career record of 96-18 which included three perfect games, eight no-hitters and 42 shutouts.  She chalked up 1,237 strikeouts which ranked 11th on the all-time Michigan high school record books.  Richardson was inducted into the Okemos High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018.

Her college career began at Central Michigan University before she moved onto the University of Evansville following her sophomore campaign.  During her senior season, she posted 139 strikeouts over 173 innings to go along with a perfect game vs Wichita State University on March 29, 2013.  She was later named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Tournament team in 2013.
