Conching Steps Down After 17 Years with HPU

HONOLULU – After 17 years of coaching, women's tennis Head Coach Lauren Conching has decided to step away from the University to pursue a position within the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

"I want to thank the University for the opportunities that were given to me. It was incredibly difficult to step away, but the timing was right. Reflecting on the 17 seasons I spent at HPU as an assistant and head coach, I am so proud of what the women's tennis program accomplished, both on and off the court. But above all, I am proud of what the program represented and the people that were a part of it. They will always be in my heart."

Conching began her coaching career as an assistant for five years before taking over the program. Since she debuted as a head coach, she amassed a career record of 202-70 (.743), and claimed three PacWest Championships. Other accolades include being a three-time PacWest Coach of the Year, six national semifinal appearances, two National ITA/Wilson Coach of the Year awards, and numerous All-American athletes.

"Lauren has been a valued presence in HPU Athletics for 17 years and will be greatly missed.  Not only is she an excellent coach, but she is also a knowledgeable and compassionate mentor to others," said A.D. Debbie Snell. "We wish her the very best in her new adventure, and I know she will bring the same passion for her sport that she has shown here at HPU and in the PacWest Conference.  Congratulations, Lauren and Mahalo Nui Loa, for all you have done for HPU Athletics and the tennis community."

Conching has dedicated herself to the game of tennis and the University, stepping in as an  Athletics Director when needed, serving on the administrative team for years, and leading her team to academic and athletic success . She has served on several committees, including the ITA Board of Directors, ITA West Ranking, ITA West Regional Award, and ITA Ethics, bringing her years of experience to her new role.

Men's tennis coach Hendrik Bode and assistant Chelsea Patton will lead the team while the school searches for a new head coach.
