12/13/2022 5:48:00 PM

ROCK ISLAND -- Karl Gollan has been elevated as the sixth head coach of the Augustana softball program, Director of Athletics Mike Zapolski announced.

"Coach Gollan has played a significant role in the transition of the Augustana softball program the last three months and I am pleased that he is able to assume even more responsibilities moving forward as our new head coach," Zapolski stated. "Karl brings a wealth of softball acumen to the table due to his longtime association with the sport--his accomplishments in the game speak for themselves. Karl has lofty goals for Augustana softball, and I am eager to partner with him in those efforts."

Lori Duncan, who was named the program's head coach in early September, has decided to step down from the position due to family commitments and health concerns. She will remain on staff as a part-time assistant coach.

"It has been a very positive start to the '22-23 year, and the softball team is driven and optimistic," Duncan said. "Allowing for the switch to Karl will provide a seamless transition as the Augustana Softball program will continue on its course back to championship status. I am thankful to be a part of an organization that is willing to adjust for one's family needs and commitments."

Gollan takes over with 35 years of softball playing experience and approximately 25 years at the international and world championship level. He was a member of New Zealand's national team from 2004-2017 and was a four-time world champion and four-time All-World selection during that span. He also owns a world championship MVP award. At a national level, Gollan's team was a 10-time national champion. He earned three national championship MVPs, four National Pitcher of the Year awards, and two National Hitter of the Year recognition.

On a coaching level, Gollan has been at the national level since 2009 with teams domestically in New Zealand and the United States, and at the International level from 2017-2019 with the New Zealand National Team, where he's currently still involved as a special advisor and consultant. He also works as a talent consultant for various programs, which he has been doing since 2013. Additionally, he worked as a trainer with USA Softball Academy for three years.

"I would like to thank Mike, Wes and the entire selection committee at Augustana College for their support and trust to lead its softball program," Gollan said. "Myself and my staff are excited about the opportunity to create a high-performance environment where our student athletes can achieve excellence in life as well as on the diamond, with the desire and focus of turning Augustana College into a championship winning program."

The elevation of Gollan to head coach will be in effect immediately. The Vikings will open up their 2023 season on February 23 at the Mount Mary Slugger Series in Peoria, Ill.
