WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Two of the top football programs in NCAA Division II's Super Region One have agreed to terms on a two-year home-and-home contract for the 2024 and 2025 seasons that will see the Chargers travel to Slippery Rock University to open the 2024 season and The Rock travel to New Haven to open the 2025 season.
New Haven and Slippery Rock are both coming off of NCAA Playoff appearances in 2022 with The Rock currently riding a four-year streak of playoff appearances and New Haven earning bids in three of the last four seasons.
In a series that dates back to the 1986 season, New Haven and Slippery Rock have met on six occasions, most recently in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs in 2018. Each team has three wins in the series with the Chargers winning the first three meetings and Slippery Rock taking the last three. In addition to the 2018 meeting, one other came in the postseason with the Chargers taking a 49-21 win in 1997 which was part of a run to the National Championship game against Northern Colorado. The other four games all came as part of home-and-home series.
The Chargers are coming off of an 8-3 season that concluded in the opening round of the Division II NCAA Playoffs, dropping a 16-13 decision to No. 11 Shepherd who advanced to the NCAA Playoff Semifinals. Leading the Chargers on the year was the Northeast-10's Offensive Player of the Year Connor Degenhardt (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) who led a group of 14 players who earned NE10 accolades. In addition to Degenhardt, return specialist Terrell Ford (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore West) picked up American Football Coaches Association All-America honors earlier this week, earning a spot on the Second Team.
