Last Friday, we reported that San Diego State will choose to stay in the Mountain West after finding no suitable partnership for a new conference. Days the situation entered muddied waters after the Mountain West received San Diego State's letter of intent and rejected the school's attempt to remain within the conference.

Heads of the conference will meet on July 17 to discuss SDSU's 'status' in the conference. The financial implications are wide, as an exit fee would cost SDSU an estimated $17 million. Additionally, the conference will withhold $6.6 million in funds from the university if they were to leave.

So where do things stand? SDSU claims they never intended to leave the conference, while the Mountain West sees the writing on the wall with the Aztecs. In 2011, much speculation was made that SDSU would join the Big East. The move was never formulated as the Mountain West Conference presidents approved the decision by San Diego State to rejoin the Mountain West Conference.

History may repeat itself as a similar meeting will be held on July 17, 2023.
