Kronzer named St. Olaf head men's and women's tennis coach

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Following a three-season stint as an assistant coach for both programs, Joey Kronzer '16 has been named the head men's and women's tennis coach at St. Olaf College, as announced by St. Olaf Athletic Director Ryan Bowles on Wednesday.

Kronzer has served as an assistant coach for the men's and women's tennis programs at St. Olaf for the last three seasons, working alongside Scott Nesbit and Chris Kuna. Kronzer takes over the women's tennis program after Nesbit retired from coaching at the end of the 2022-23 season to bring an end to his 34-year tenure and assumes head coaching duties of the men's program after Kuna's four-year stretch leading the program.

"We are excited to promote Joey to head coach," Bowles said. "It was clear that he shares a passion for St. Olaf and a vision for developing our student-athletes. The future of St. Olaf men's and women's tennis is bright with him at the helm."

During Kronzer's three years as an assistant coach, the St. Olaf women's program posted a combined record of 22-20 (.523) overall, including a mark of 16-13 (.552) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, and qualified for the MIAC Playoffs in all three seasons. The Oles advanced to the semifinals of the six-team tournament in both 2020-21 and 2022-23. The St. Olaf men's program won at least six matches and recorded at least three MIAC victories in each of Kronzer's three seasons as an assistant.

"As a former student-athlete at St. Olaf and having served as an assistant coach for the past three years, I am excited and profoundly honored to serve as the head men's and women's tennis coach," Kronzer said. "It is a privilege to contribute to the growth and successes of the tennis programs while continuing to uphold the rich tradition of excellence that St. Olaf embodies. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to shape the future of the programs and eager to mentor and guide the talented student-athletes in achieving their goals on and off the court."

Prior to his time at St. Olaf, Kronzer spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Hamline University (2017-19) and one season on the staff at the University of St. Thomas (2019-20). As a student-athlete at St. Olaf, Kronzer was an All-MIAC selection in both singles and doubles in each of his final three seasons and helped the Oles qualify for the MIAC Playoffs three times, including runs to the championship match in 2013-14 and the semifinals in 2014-15.

Kronzer graduated from St. Olaf in 2016 with a bachelor of arts in psychology and went on to earn his master of science in kinesiology, sport and exercise psychology from the University of Minnesota in 2020.
