AMES, Iowa -- Auburn University at Montgomery head tennis coach Yair Banuelos was announced as the new assistant women's tennis coach at Iowa State University today. 
 
"This is a bittersweet moment for me and my family," Banuelos said. "AUM and Montgomery have been a great place that I got to call home. I leave with great memories from both teams. I hope Warhawk Nation and the tennis alumni are happy with the work that we did throughout these six years."
 
Banuelos, who joined the AUM program in September of 2017, led the Warhawks to a 131-93 record during his tenure, a pair of appearances in the Gulf South Conference championship match, and three appearances in the NCAA Division II South Region tournament. 
 
Last season, the men's team made history as they advanced to the GSC Championship match and the NCAA Division II South Region for the first time in school history with a 16-9 overall record. 
 
The Auburn Montgomery women's team reached the GSC Tournament championship match in 2022 and competed in the NCAA Division II South Region in 2022 and 2023. During the two years, AUM secured 35 victories and 18 wins in conference matches. 
 
Banuelos has coached 12 All-GSC players and a pair of Intercollegiate Tennis Association Doubles All-Americans. 
 
Academically, Banuelos has coached 82 players that have earned a spot on the GSC Academic Honor Roll and eight on the GSC All-Academic Team. 
 
"I want to thank all the AUM staff, coaches, and student-athletes that I got to work with for the trust that they had in me each year," Banuelos said. "I will miss friends that I made along the way and to all my former student-athletes, THANK YOU for sharing the tennis courts with me! I will cherish my time here at AUM forever. Go Warhawks!"
