Marc Walters Named Head Tennis Coach

Elkins, W. Va. – Davis & Elkins Director of Athletics Patrick Snively named Marc Walters as the next head coach of the Davis & Elkins men's and women's tennis teams. Walters comes to D&E from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee where he had been the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach since 2019.

"When Mark's application came across my desk, I knew this was a high character person that I wanted here at this institution," said David Pomeroy, Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations.  "His resume speaks volumes for what he is capable of doing for a tennis program but also matches the direction Davis & Elkins athletics is heading, and that's quite simply put as winning."

With a reputation for successfully rebuilding programs, Walters has a quarter-century of collegiate head coaching experience and owns nearly 700 wins across NCAA Divisions I and II in his career, which ranks him among the elite in Division II. In his new role at D&E, Walters will run all facets of the Senators Tennis program.

"I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to return to West Virginia and join a terrific institution at Davis & Elkins College," Walters said.  "I would personally like to thank President Chris Wood and the members of the search committee, as well as Mr. David Pomeroy, for their support and efforts throughout the process. I am looking forward to meeting the players, generating community momentum, and to be working within the MEC again."

Walters, a Morgantown, W. Va. Native, has over 25 years of head coaching experience. He previously built nationally ranked programs at West Virginia Wesleyan, Barton College, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney in Division II. He also returned home to Morgantown and served as the head women's coach at Division I West Virginia University from 2006-2010, leading his 2010 team to a program best #7 Atlantic Regional ranking.

Walters has served on the NCAA and ITA regional committees, the ITA Awards Committee, and the ITA National Rankings committee. He has directed 5 ITA championship events, including the 2018 and 2019 Men's Atlantic regional in Charleston, WV.Va. and the Southeast Regionals in Wilson, N.C. During his tenure in DI and DII, he has amassed 12 DII NCAA regional appearances, a Sweet 16, and eleven conference titles between the men's and women's programs over his career.

A 1987 graduate of Fairmont State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree, Walters received his Master of Science degree in sport administration and athletic coaching from West Virginia in 1992.

The Senators Men's Tennis team begins their spring season on February 3rd when they will compete in the Charleston Invite hosted by the University of Charleston, while the women's team starts their spring campaign on February 13th at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.
