Colin McSharar '11 Returns to MSJ to Lead Men's Lacrosse Program

CINCINNATI, Ohio – For the first time the Mount St. Joseph men's lacrosse program will have an MSJ alum at the helm as Colin McSharar '11 has been named the new head men's lacrosse coach.

McSharar was a part of the MSJ men's lacrosse program from 2008-11, during which the program improved tremendously. Culminating in a 2011 season in which they won double-digit games for the first time (10), went 6-2 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) and appeared in the MLCs championship game.

When asked about what returning home means coach McSharar had this to say, "I am ecstatic to return home to The Mount to take over a program I helped start as a player. My experience as a student athlete at The Mount gave me so many tools to excel in a field of which I am most passionate. I cannot wait to get started and move the program in a direction that makes our MSJ family, especially the alumni, current, and future players proud to be a Lion."

McSharar comes back to the Mount after a spending time at Butler University where he directed the men's and women's club programs. Following his three years at Butler, he helped to start a pair of women's lacrosse programs at rival Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference (HCLC) schools. First at Franklin College where he helped elevate their club program to varsity status, then at Anderson University where he was hired to start that program.

Since 2021 he has been serving the Uganda Lacrosse Association, where he was hired to be the first women's team head coach with the explicit goal of becoming the first African nation to compete in the world championships. This experience led him the co-found Coaches Without Borders, which has led him to travel the world conducting clinics in underserved areas. The group also helps to train coaches in a 360 model to help them better serve their athletes.

"We are excited to announce Coach McSharar as our new head men's lacrosse coach," said MSJ Director of Athletics Melanee Wagener. "To have a former Mount lacrosse player at the helm of the program is instrumental in rekindling the championship culture within that program."

Coach McSharar added "I would like to thank AD Melanee Wagener, President Williams, and the rest of the search committee for trusting me.  I also wish to thank my former MSJ coaches and professors, as well as the countless teammates and supporters who have made an impact on my career that has taken me all over the world. God is in control! His plan is perfect. And with every experience I have had the past several years in my career, it just feels right to be given this opportunity at this time."
