MELBOURNE, Fla.- Florida Tech Director of Athletics Jamie Joss announces Marc Small as the next Head Coach of the Cross Country and Indoor/Outdoor Track programs and Pete Mazzone as the Associate Head Coach.
 
"We are thrilled to expand Marc's role within athletics with over 25 years as an accomplished track coach to bring a fresh perspective and innovation to our program as he focuses on the sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers, and we are elated that Pete will continue to leverage his vast distance coaching experience in concentrating on our distance scholar-athletes," Joss said.
 
"We have no doubt that this duo possesses the leadership, passion, and expertise to develop not only the athletes' physical abilities but also their academic and leadership skills as we develop scholars, champions, and leaders."
 
Small, who also serves as the Director of Athletic Partnerships & Promotions, came to Florida Tech in March 2023 after serving as the Baccalaureate Programs Specialist/Athletic Instructor at Seminole State College of Florida.
 
Small has also served as the Director of Business Development and Executive Coach of the Orlando Track Coach (OTC) program since 2019.
 
Prior to Seminole State, Small spent two years at Florida A&M as the Director of Track & Field while also serving on the Retention Committee, NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program Committee, and Alumni Outreach Coordinator.
 
Small began his coaching career at Lake Superior State University in 2006, spending two years as a Track & Field assistant and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator.
 
In 2008, Small returned to his alma mater, Tiffin University, where he assisted in producing 70 national qualifying marks, over 40 All-Conference selections, and 17 All-Americans.
 
He also had coaching stints at Keiser University and Lakeland College.
 
A former Division II Scholar-Athlete, Small was a member of Tiffin's track & field team from 2002 to 2006 and led the then-NAIA Dragons to three consecutive American Mideast Conference championships. Upon graduating in 2006, he was part of six school records and still ranks among the top five in several events.
 
Small graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Tiffin in 2006 and earned his Master's in Education from Lake Superior State in 2008.
 
Pete Mazzone, who also serves as the Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Equipment, has been an active member of the Florida Tech athletic department for the past 37 years.
 
"I am excited the men's cross country and track program to be back to varsity status at Florida Tech, and I am looking forward to coaching back in the Sunshine State Conference," said Mazzone. "I am also looking forward to working and coaching alongside Coach Small in helping him build this program into, what I know, can be a championship-caliber program." 
 
Over his tenure at Florida Tech, Mazzone has held numerous positions, including Assistant Athletic Director, Intramural Director, Strength Coach, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Associate Athletic Director, and Interim Athletic Director.
 
He became the Assistant Athletic Director at Florida Tech in 1985 and then the Head Coach for the Men's & Women's Cross-Country teams seven years later in 1992.
 
In 1998, the men's team finished second, and the women's team finished fourth in the SSC. For this, he was named the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in three years.
 
From 2011 to 2015, Mazzone also served as the first Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Track & Field teams, two programs he helped establish at Florida Tech.
 
Mazzone has produced over 70 cross-country all-conference selections, six NCAA Individual qualifiers and led the 2012 men's program to an NCAA Championship appearance.
 
Mazzone received his bachelor's degree in physical education at Frostburg State (Maryland) in 1978. He received his master's degree in exercise science at the University of Central Florida in 1989.
