McGlashen tabbed to lead IUP women’s tennis program

INDIANA, Pa. – Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Director of Athletics Todd Garzarelli announced the appointment of Andrew McGlashen as the next head coach for the women's tennis program.

McGlashen becomes the sixth head coach in the program's history, which dates back to 1970. A former collegiate tennis player with instructing and coaching experience, McGlashen brings no shortage of experience and knowledge across various levels of the sport.

McGlashen arrives in Indiana following a two-year stint as the head men's and women's tennis coach at Cardinal Stritch (NAIA) in Wisconsin. A two-time Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Coach of the Year, McGlashen helped lead the nationally-ranked tennis programs to a combined three conference championships during his time at Cardinal Stritch.

"Andrew's impressive resume and prior experiences within the sport stood out during the hiring process," Garzarelli said. "His international recruiting ability, combined with a demonstrated tenure of working with nationally prominent tennis programs made Andrew a great fit for our department and university."

Originally raised in the United Kingdom, McGlashen recruited 12 international student-athletes to Stritch over two years, helping elevate the men's tennis program up to eighth nationally in the NAIA. Serving as the conference chair for 2022-23, McGlashen oversaw day-to-day functions of the program, practice planning and oversight of a graduate assistant.

"I'm very excited to be joining the IUP family," McGlashin said. "This program is a regular in the NCAA Tournament, and I'm looking forward to working with the ladies to achieve success for many years to come."

Prior to his first head coaching stint, McGlashen worked for seven years (2014-21) as head tennis professional and assistant director at the Chira Tennis Academy in San Diego. While there, he designed lesson plans for high performance juniors, also running group practices for those juniors and adults. He helped build the academy into the largest tennis academy in San Diego with over 350 players.

He spent less than a year as a full-time tennis coach at the Hitters Sportsplex in Madison, Wisconsin in 2014.

"I'd also like to thank Todd Garzarelli for giving me the opportunity at IUP," McGlashin continued. "The family atmosphere at IUP was second to none and as soon as I stepped on campus I knew this is where I wanted to be."

McGlashen began his coaching career as an assistant at Wisconsin-Whitewater, his alma mater, where he served as the team's captain during his time as a student-athlete. From 2010-2013, he was a part of three straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (WIAC) championships as a player. He attended Sutton Tennis Academy, one of the top academies in the U.K., while playing at a top-50 national level.

He earned a bachelor's in liberal studies with an emphasis in business and a minor in coaching from UWW in 2013.

IUP women's tennis captured a third consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship in 2022-23, which included a trip to the NCAA Round of 16 in Orlando. It also marked the third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for IUP, marking a stretch of 11 NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 13 years.

The Crimson Hawks finished second in the final ITA regional rankings with four all-conference selections. Academically, IUP women's tennis had student-athletes earn the PSAC Champion Scholar award (Karolin Kirchtag), NCAA Elite 90 award (Joanna Stralka), a spot on the PSAC Spring Top 10 (Kirchtag) and CSC Academic All-America honors (Kirchtag and Stralka).
