UConn and women’s hockey coach Chris Mackenzie have agreed on terms for a new six-year contract, the school announced on Wednesday.

Like many of the athletic programs on campus this season, the women’s hockey team has been on the rise. The Huskies are 12-8-8 this season and 7-7-2 in Hockey East, and are ranked No. 14 in the country in the USCHO.com poll.

UConn has reached the Hockey East championship game in three of the past five seasons, and finished 24-9-4 last season.

“We are excited to announce that Coach Mackenzie will be leading our women’s hockey program for the foreseeable future,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a release. “Coach Mackenzie has built UConn women’s hockey into a national name, with three Hockey East Championship appearances in five seasons, and continuously seeing his teams featured in the national polls.

“As the new on-campus Toscano Family Ice Forum comes online, this contract reaffirms our investment into the program, and of our intention to compete for championships. Mackenzie has UConn women’s hockey set up for continued success, and I am excited for what’s to come.”

“I’m excited to continue to work with our staff and current student athletes. We are proud of our history and excited for the future of this program! The commitment and hard work of so many has put our program in a great position,” Mackenzie said in a release. “Our goal is to continue to strive for excellence in everything we do, and one day hang a Championship banner in our new home.”

Mackenzie is in his 10th season as UConn head coach.
