President Donald Trump on Friday shared his take on NIL and the priority for funding to go to football programs: “I think that it’s a disaster for college sports. I think it’s a disaster for the Olympics. We’re losing a lot of teams. Colleges are cutting their, they would call them, sort of the lesser sports. They’re losing them at numbers nobody can believe. And they were really training grounds, beautiful training grounds. Hard-working, wonderful young people. They were training grounds for the Olympics, and a lot of these sports that were training so well would win gold medals because of it. Those sports don’t exist because they’re putting all that money into football. And, by the way, they’re putting too much money into football because colleges don’t make – even the most successful universities don’t make that much money. … I think the NIL is a disaster for sports. It’s horrible for the Olympics. I think it’s actually horrible for the players. And you’re losing all of these great sports. They’re not college football.” Trump also believes in a salary cap, especially given the strain that not having one puts on athletic department finances. Trump: “You’re going to have these colleges wipe themselves out, and something ought to be done. And I’m willing to put the federal government behind it. But if it’s not done fast, you’re going to wipe out colleges. They’re going to get wiped out, including ones that do well in football. They can’t pay $12M, $14M, $10M, $6M for players. They won’t be able to stop. There’ll always be that one player, they only have that player, they’re going to win the national championship. And they’ll have 100 colleges thinking the same thing. Colleges cannot afford to play this game. It’s a very bad thing that’s happening.” More. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger broke the news that the Big 12 is finalizing a deal with RedBird and Weatherford Capital - via their joint Collegiate Athletic Solutions (CAS) investment vehicle - that would infuse as much as $500M into Big 12 members who opt-in through a “multifaceted strategic business partnership,” with a focus on growing commercial operations. Here are more nuggets from a number of sources…

➤ CAS is offering roughly $30 million to each member school in a capital credit line at a reduced rate. Schools are not required to accept the capital. Also, deals like Utah’s with Otro Capital would not be impacted.

➤ “CAS would put $25 million into a new entity called Big 12 properties that would house some of the league’s commercial rights.”

➤ “RedBird will also work with the Conference to identify complementary investment opportunities inside and outside of the collegiate athletics ecosystem that will create new revenue streams and long-term asset appreciation.”

➤ “Schools will be able to opt into the funds, with participants conceding future conference distributions for the upfront cash, a source said. In other words, CAS would share in revenue generated under the partnership with the involved schools. There is no equity involved in the current proposal, and no grant of rights would be signed by the conference’s 16 members as part of the deal because it is time-limited to the league’s current media deals, according to the source.”

NCAA President Charlie Baker sits down for an interview with Yahoo’s Kendall Baker and explains that upon taking the job he talked with upwards of 1,000 student-athletes to get a lay of the land, many of whom brought up issues around sports gambling. Here are the key nuggets from Baker… 

➤ Baker believes the pressure prop bets put on student-athletes is likely not something that’s fully understood yet, as student-athletes are told: “‘Look, I don’t want you to lose the game, but just don’t score more than 20 points. Miss your first shot. Don’t hit your first free throw. Don’t catch your first pass.’ It sounds so easy to the person who’s trying to get the kid to do this, and it’s just relentless, the pressure.” 

➤ He emphasizes that these requests undermine team play even when they stop short of outright game-fixing: “It’s like, ‘Hey, I’m not asking you to do something awful or terrible. I’m not asking you to throw the game,’ right? But what you are asking them to do is not play the game the way they would choose to play it if their goal was to be a good teammate and win.”

The University of Michigan Board of Regents has authorized the law firm Jenner & Block to expand its investigation into the "situation" around former Football HC Sherrone Moore's firing. The firm was previously hired to investigate the allegations against Moore weeks ago, when the board first heard the rumors. According to the Detroit News’ Sarah Atwood: “The firm's investigation into the entire situation will continue and look into the way Moore's firing was handled and the culture of the athletic department that allowed his relationship with a subordinate to go on.” Of note, Jenner & Block is the same firm the university's board hired to investigate the allegations of former President Mark Schlissel's relationship with a university employee. Omaha announces it will opt into the House settlement for the 2026-27 academic year as part of a multi-year plan to: institute Alston Award benefit distribution for the 2025-2026 academic year; increase the amount of scholarships and cost-of-attendance stipends for select revenue sports; and solidify institutional and third-party NIL logistics with strategic partners, including Opendorse, the Omaha Bull Market Collective, Learfield, and adidas.
