On what the NCAA wants to be able to do but can’t without some limited antitrust exemption: “The primary issue for us is really around what I would describe as sort of eligibility. And when I talk eligibility, I'm not just talking five years to play four, I'm also talking academic eligibility. I mean, we've had judges basically throw out academic eligibility in some of these cases that we've been in court on. … If we get to the point where grades don't matter anymore for anybody who's playing college sports, I think that's a problem. … I think the federal preemption around a lot of the state laws, which really are just naked attempts by states to create special advantages for the schools in their own state and competing, that's not just an NCAA issue. That's a conference issue as well. … To me, the big issue with the transfer thing is do you really want kids transferring every year? …  We have a lot of that now because they can. And again, if you get rid of the academic rules and you get rid of the eligibility rules generally, then you've completely divorced the whole idea that getting a degree matters or figuring out what it is you want to do with the rest of your life matters. Even for the kids who play in the 5% of the very top end of college sports, the vast majority of them are not going to play professionally, and we are not doing them a favor by pretending that their college degree is meaningless.” (link)

Texas tops CNBC’s Official College Sports Valuations Top 75 list of the most valuable college athletic programs for 2025 having climbed 16% YoY from 2024 to a valuation of $1.48B, while pulling in aggregate revenue of $332M, more than any other school and 23% more than in the previous year, per the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database. Last year’s most valuable program, Ohio State, dropped to the second spot with a valuation of $1.35B, 2% more than last year, after seeing program revenue decline by 9% to $255M in FY24 due to a 20% decrease in ticket revenue resulting from the Buckeyes having hosted two fewer football home games. Texas A&M ($1.32B valuation/2024 revenue of $266M), Georgia ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $242M) and Michigan ($1.16B valuation/2024 revenue of $239M) rounded out CNBC’s top five. Combined, the top 75 athletic programs on the list are worth a combined $51.22B, 13% more than the value in last year’s rankings, with FY24 aggregate revenue of $11.84B, 8% more than last year. Also of note, Oregon State is the highest valued non-Power 4 school coming in at No. 61 ($440M valuation/2024 revenue of $120M). Complete list. (link)

The rev share breakdown at NC State has been publicly released: football got $13.5M, men’s basketball received $4M and women’s basketball grabbed $1M. The Wolfpacker’s Noah Fleischman: “In turn, the other 15 Olympic sports on campus were given a figure that the coaching staffs were able to divvy up as they felt fit best by either adding more scholarships, or to pay athletes through revenue sharing or Alston payments. … Only the first $2M of increased scholarships for Olympic sports counted against the $20.5M cap.” Women’s track/cross country led the way with $932K, followed by baseball ($792K), softball and women’s swimming ($726K each) and women’s soccer ($660K) to round out the top five.
