U.S. Congressman Michael Baumgartner (R-WA) has introduced a bill that would provide a limited antitrust exemption to cap college football coaching salaries. A release from the Baumgartner camp breaks down the fine points of the COACH Act, as it’s called: “The Mechanics: Amends Title IV of the Higher Education Act and provides a limited, targeted antitrust exemption so schools can collectively set a reasonable compensation ceiling for athletics department employees. The Cap: As a condition of participating in federal student-aid programs, institutions agree to limit total compensation of any athletics department employee to 10x the institution's tuition and required fees for a first-time, full-time undergraduate for the most recent year. … No loopholes: ‘Total compensation’ is defined broadly to include salary, bonuses, deferred compensation, severance/buyouts, in-kind support, housing/mortgage or debt relief, personal-services contracts, and other remuneration-from the university or any affiliated or controlled booster organization. Why it matters: A single season's buyout can mirror a full year of operating revenue at many programs and rival top-tier budgets. Instead of paying coaches not to coach, resources should be used to control costs, limit financial liabilities of federally subsidized programs, and preserve scholarships and Olympic sports.” (link) 

The SEC is lobbying to have the NCAA rescind its recent decision allowing college athletes to bet on professional sports with league commissioner Greg Sankey describing the move as a “major step in the wrong direction.” Per Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger, Sankey observes any concerns over the previous policy to prohibit athletes to bet on all sports should be addressed not “through a wholesale removal of the guardrails” but “careful refinement” of the policy. The reversal of the ban threatens the “integrity of competition” and makes athletes more “vulnerable” to exploitation. “What might begin as casual betting can quickly spiral into something far more serious. [...] The SEC’s Presidents and Chancellors believe the NCAA should restore its prior policy — or a modified policy — communicating a prohibition on gambling by student-athletes and athletics staff, regardless of the divisional level of their sport.” Dellenger adds: “The SEC’s letter highlights the most recent sports gambling scandal in the NBA, which shows that ‘even coaches and athletes with extensive oversight, education and support systems’ can get caught in conduct that compromises competition.” Sankey: “It is foreseeable that college athletes, with far fewer resources and far greater outside influence, can be involved in compromising circumstances.” (link, link - Full letter)

An Orangeburg, South Carolina, jury has awarded former South Carolina State football student-athlete Robert Geathers $18M after it found that the NCAA was aware of the risks of repeated concussions but failed to warn Geathers, who played for the Bulldogs from 1977-81 and now struggles with severe memory loss and can’t hold a job, make a meal or dress himself. The State’s Ted Clifford also reports Geathers was diagnosed with dementia in 2017 at the age of 59. Strom Law Firm attorney Bakari Sellers, who represented Geathers, says they had not sued SC State because they felt that the NCAA was ultimately responsible for Geathers’ suffering: “[The NCAA] had information from these experts. They didn’t provide that information to the schools.” Once the judgement is entered, the NCAA will have 30 days to file a notice of appeal. (link)

LSU has relieved Football HC Brian Kelly of his duties, and Tigers AD Scott Woodward says, in part: “We wish Coach Kelly and his family the very best in their future endeavors. We will continue to negotiate his separation and will work toward a path that is better for both parties. … While there will certainly be speculation and reports on candidates and the process, together we will celebrate and welcome a new coach at the appropriate time.” (link); If Kelly’s buyout remains unchanged ($53M in total), he is set to receive receive $740,185 per month until December 31, 2031, subject to mitigation, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who adds: “As part of Kelly’s contract with LSU, the head coach was given an interest-free mortgage loan with relocation costs of up to $1.2M. The Tigers also pay for an annual car allowance, $275K per year for private air travel and a Baton Rouge country club membership.” (link); Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger gets this from a LSU “influencer”: “It’s the most Louisiana thing ever that the governor is directly involved in a decision over a football coach.” Also, from a school official on Kelly’s buyout: “You can always find the money.” (link)

Oregon State is parting ways with Executive Deputy AD/COO Brent Blaylock, according to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake, who adds: “The agreement Blaylock helped orchestrate between Oregon State and Blueprint Sports is also being unwound, sources tell me. A formal announcement that the sides have ‘mutually’ agreed to part ways is expected as early as Tuesday. According to a source with knowledge of that deal, ‘What will eventually come out is that the $750K guarantee was not actually guaranteed. At least it’s not written in the contract that way.’ The contract also includes an $850K separation fee. Officials at OSU and Blueprint negotiated throughout the weekend, per sources. The Beavers are expected to pay a reduced sum in the range of $150K to $284K to exit the deal.” Canzano goes on to note that Dam Nation Founder Kyle Bjornstad in March informed OSU that he would dissolve the collective. “Bjornstad said the tandem of Barnes and Blaylock convinced him it was better to sell Dam Nation to a third party instead of closing it down. The school coveted the more than $240K in annual recurring monthly membership donations that were flowing into the NIL entity. … The sale of Dam Nation to Blueprint Sports, however, has turned into a raging mess.” Rather than sell to Blueprint, Bjornstad encouraged OSU to explore another potential partner he’d sourced, Lockerverse, who would’ve guaranteed OSU a minimum of $288K each year plus 75% of all funds raised beyond $288K. Bjornstad eventually took a GM job with OSU but resigned on October 2. Per Canzano, he “felt like he’d been misled during the Blueprint negotiation. He wondered if he was being fashioned as a scapegoat in the aftermath of the deal. No doubt, Bjornstad cared more about Dam Nation than anyone. He built it.
