American Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells The Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster that his league is the “most raided conference in the transfer portal on an annual basis, and it’s not a badge of honor. I look at it two ways, which is how do we solve for this? And the other side of it is we’re recruiting the right kind of talent into this league.” Schools, Pernetti adds, need to find a way to create insurance on these investments. “And, by the way, I’ve met with outside insurance firms that are willing to come in and underwrite this risk because they see it as there’s so much transaction in the space there’s money to be made on it. But until a school has more protection on their investment, here’s what happens. You’re an athletic director, you raise the money, you pay Jeff $500K to come and play and nine months later he leaves for $1M at another school. You have to go re-raise that $500K so you have enough to give it to other players. There needs to be, whether it’s a buyout or whether it’s a penalty that gets passed forward to the school that’s acquiring that student-athlete – I don’t think you’re going to be able to sell that one – but getting into contractual agreements at the high level is where we have to go. And some schools are already doing it.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “at fancy parties in the hills of California and within luxury suites high above the [LA Coliseum], influential donors and university board members” of Michigan and USC “met, mingled and dished on the latest big story from their conference: Is the Big Ten really about to enter into a $2.4B capital deal with a California pension fund?” One board member tells Dellenger: “We don’t have any reason why we need to do this particular deal,” and another notes: “The more people understand this, the more people have questions.” A person with knowledge of the USC Board of Trustees’ position also remarks that “they aren’t on board.” Dellenger goes on to explain that “it is more clear than ever that a decision is upon the conference one way or another. In fact, the schools received 200-plus pages of governance documents over the weekend detailing specifics of the agreement with UC Investments. The conference office has also scheduled a meeting for late this week with its presidents.” Another twist is both Michigan & USC have interim Presidents at the moment. An unnamed university board member sums it up like this: “[Big Ten Commissioner] Tony [Pettiti] is trying to be the best steward of the Big Ten. But why lock yourself into a 20-year grant of rights? The world is changing every three minutes.” (link)

An example of things to come for college athletics? High-profile English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur has received a nearly $134M capital infusion from its majority owner, ENIC Sports & Development, to give the club financial funding to invest in players, facilities and more. Front Office Sports’ Ben Horney notes the infusion comes as the team has batted back three takeover attempts since the start of September. The offers came from PCP International Finance, Firehawk Holdings, and a group led by Brooklyn Earick, a U.S. entrepreneur who runs a Singapore-based venture capital firm. According to its most recent financial results, Spurs’ revenue for last year was $703.9M, down from $732.4M in 2023. The club largely attributes the decrease to it’s participation in Champions League in 2023 (the club did not qualify for the UCL in 2024). Despite the dip in revenue, the team’s 2024 net loss was $34.8M, down from $115.4M in 2023. (link) 

Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson joins The College Football Mafia podcast to discuss the role of private equity in college sports, the fight between Fox and ESPN to control premium broadcast windows, what’s in store for the next decade of college football and more. Thompson also weighs in on Texas Tech Board of Regents’ Cody Campbell’s idea to amend the Sports Broadcasting Act and doesn’t believe the claim that pooling media rights would result in upwards of $7B in new money. Thompson said consultants “will usually tell you what you want to hear, so they keep getting paid,” and pushed back hard on Campbell’s math, noting here’s already ~$5.5B flowing to conferences. “You’re going to tell me that it’s going to more than double… just by jointly pooling your rights? I don’t buy it.” He also said the NFL scheduling analogy doesn’t translate because college has too many games/teams to avoid overlap, and even the NFL overlaps most games outside of primetime. Thompson also pushed back on Campbell’s assertion that Olympic and women’s sports aren’t aired. “[The SEC Network, Big Ten Network and ACC Network] live on that product.” In fact, to illustrate how much content is available, Thompson pointed out he can stream his granddaughter’s high school softball games.
