OVC Commissioner Beth DeBauche has resigned effective immediately after 16 years leading the league to focus on family matters. Lindenwood President/OVC Board of Presidents and Chancellors Chair John Porter: “Beth DeBauche has been a transformative leader for the Ohio Valley Conference. Her vision, integrity, and dedication to the student-athlete experience have left an enduring legacy. We are deeply grateful for her years of service and leadership.” Assoc. Commissioner for Football, Basketball and Baseball Greg Walter will serve as Acting Commissioner as the league “will be engaging an outside firm to conduct a national search for an Interim Commissioner, which will help set the course for future leadership of the OVC.” (link)
The DII (link) and DIII (link) Management Councils have approved legislation to permit student-athletes and athletics department staff members to bet on professional sports, paving the way for the new rule to take effect on November 1 for all three divisions. Slippery Rock (DII) AD/Council Chair Roberta Page: "Our action reflects alignment across divisions while maintaining the principles that guide college sports. This change recognizes the realities of today's sports environment without compromising our commitment to protecting the integrity of college competition or the well-being of student-athletes." NCAA President Charlie Baker on today’s NBA gambling arrests: “We are grateful for federal law enforcement's efforts to stamp out illegal sports betting, and I am proud that the NCAA continues to have the most aggressive competition integrity policies in place. The Association has and will continue to pursue sports betting violations using a layered integrity monitoring program for over 22,000 contests, but we still need more states, regulators and gaming companies to help in this effort by eliminating risky prop bets to reduce opportunities for manipulation.” (link); In case you haven’t seen the news, Portland Trail Blazers HC Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and former Cleveland Cavaliers player and AC Damon Jones have been arrested as part of a pair of wide-ranging investigations related to illegal sports betting and rigged poker games backed by the Mafia, authorities announced Thursday. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy the league is “in the best place we can be in the current landscape. Given all the change around us, we’ve been able to hold onto the things that I think are important to be successful in the college basketball universe. I think about membership stability – we’ve got nothing going with expansion. No one’s leaving, as far as I know. ... We’ve got the TV deal, which was a vote of confidence by the networks and the quality of the programming [we offer]. I hear other commissioners talk about basketball being undervalued. We don’t think that’s the case here. … Having the focus on basketball at a time when other schools are pretty distracted by football, I think, is a plus. Now, we don’t have their resources, but we don’t have their expenses. Where that nets out, I don’t know. It’ll depend in part on how the College Sports Commission can effectively enforce the valid business purpose and reasonable range of compensation on third-party [NIL] payments. If that can stay managed, then it could be an advantage for a school that doesn’t have to pay football.” (link)
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says the amount of time it’s taking for the College Sports Commission to process NIL deals is “not a glitch. It’s a feature.” He adds: “The CSC is doing the critical work to ensure there's no pay for play in our industry. Deals that aren't above board are getting the scrutiny they deserve, this is a new year of enforcement. Complying with these new rules is not optional.” Yormark favors expanding March Madness if the “economics make sense,” adding: “There's nothing like the NCAA Tournament in all of sports, and I understand why fans may be apprehensive towards any change. That said, I think a format that improves access and economics without losing what makes the event so special is worth exploring.” Yormark on private equity: “I've done [the due diligence], and I did it early in fact, and we like where we are right now. That doesn't mean we're not exploring different options. But private equity for us doesn't work. We're very bullish on our future. We're not giving a stake to anyone. We want that upside.” (link)
