Sources: Jeff Brohm leaves Purdue, accepts Louisville job

College Football, Louisville Cardinals, Purdue Boilermakers

Jeff Brohm has accepted the Louisville head-coaching job and will return to his alma mater, sources told ESPN on Wednesday.

Brohm, 51, has been the head coach at Purdue the past six seasons and guided the Boilermakers to the Big Ten championship game this season.

His contract with the Cardinals is expected to be for six years and in the $35 million range, sources told ESPN. The University of Louisville Athletic Association executive committee has scheduled a meeting at 4 p.m. ET Thursday at Cardinal Stadium, where it is expected to approve the contract.

Brohm had an outstanding playing career at Louisville, throwing for 5,451 yards, and remains among the school's leaders in touchdown passes (38) and total offense while going 15-10 as a starter. He played eight seasons in the NFL and XFL and was inducted into the Louisville Ring of Honor in 2006.

Brohm, widely regarded as one of the top quarterback coaches in football, served as a Louisville assistant coach from 2003 to 2008 and worked part of that time under Bobby Petrino. Brohm made other coaching stops at Florida Atlantic, Illinois, UAB and Western Kentucky before becoming the Hilltoppers' head coach in 2014.

From Louisville, Kentucky, Brohm was a standout quarterback at Trinity High School. He turned down the Louisville job at the end of the 2018 season to stay at Purdue, where he was 36-34 and guided it to the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against LSU this season.

Overall, he has a 66-44 record as a head coach.

Brohm replaces Scott Satterfield, who left to take the Cincinnati head coaching job earlier this week. Satterfield went 25-24 with the Cardinals, who play Cincinnati in the Fenway Bowl on Dec. 17.

In a related move, running back Rueben Owens, the No. 42 overall prospect in the 2023 ESPN 300 from El Campo, Texas, who committed to Louisville in June, on Wednesday rescinded that decision and committed to Texas A&M.

"This is so bittersweet or me, due to all the relationships that have been developed [with Satterfield and his staff at Louisville]," Owens, who is ESPN's No. 4-ranked running back recruit, said in a statement to Rivals.com on his Instagram page.

According to a report by On3.com, Brohm's younger brother, Brian Brohm, will fill in as Purdue's interim head coach for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl matchup against LSU on Jan. 1 (1 p.m., ABC).
