Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell reportedly remarked during yesterday’s Knight Commission meeting that commissioners had acknowledged to him “privately” that they know a modification of the Sports Broadcasting Act would generate more revenue, “but I don’t want to give up control of my own media-rights negotiation.” According to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, those discussions have never happened: “I have never stated – publicly or privately – that pooling media rights would increase revenue, nor do I believe that it would. His misrepresentation of my position raises serious concerns about the accuracy of his other claims. ... His comments reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of the realities of college athletics.” Sankey adds: “My responsibility lies with the institutions I serve and the student-athletes on our campuses. Mr. Campbell’s suggestion that commissioners are indifferent to the institutional level is both irresponsible and damaging to his own credibility.” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark similarly remarked that “Cody is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts. I’ve never said pooling media rights will increase revenue. The only thing I have said is that hope isn’t a strategy. There are unintended consequences to amending the (SBA) that Cody and his team need to better understand. … Our decisions are rooted in collaboration, accountability, and a deep understanding of the institutional impact for student-athletes. The SCORE Act is the first step in solving the issues facing collegiate athletics.” (link) 

ESPN’s Pete Thamel & Dan Wetzel add context to the massive news of the Big Ten potentially taking a $2B+ investment from UC Investments to create a new Big Ten Enterprises unit to further monetize the conference’s assets. Of particular note: “The pension fund is not a private equity firm, and the UC fund valuation proved to be higher than other competing bids. [...] The exact equity amounts per school in Big Ten Enterprises is still being negotiated. There is expected to be a small gap in equity percentage between the biggest brands and others, however it is likely to be less than a percentage point. [...] The UC pension fund would receive a 10% stake in Big Ten Enterprises and hold typical minority investor rights but no direct control. [...] The deal has not been without detractors, with both Michigan and Ohio State -- the league's two wealthiest athletic programs -- expressing skepticism initially, per sources. Each school has been hit with significant lobbying not just from the league office but also other conference members to come to an agreement.” (link); Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich indicates a vote on the matter is expected next week. Divvying up the assets between what can be monetized/controlled at the school level and what can be monetized/controlled at the conference level. Some members of the Penn State Board of Trustees are "aggrieved" over two specific elements from the Adidas and Nike apparel offers they say were never disclosed to the board, per Front Office Sports’ Daniel Roberts and Dennis Young, who report that Nike’s offer included more than $30M in upfront cash, while the Adidas contract included an “annual product allotment of $500K  in retail value for athletic director Patrick Kraft,” starting in 2027, separate from the annual $8M athletic department product allotment. In response to FOS, Penn State BOT chair David Kleppinger and vice chair Rick Sokolov vigorously denied any misconduct around the deal. PSU Deputy AD for Strategic Engagement and Brand Advancement Leah Beasley confirmed both the $500K product allotment and the AD contract wording, remarking: “That’s pretty standard for apparel deals, and it is for the discretion of the athletic department, it is not for Pat Kraft personally. It is encompassing of many things. It’s for the university and athletic department to take care of coaches, staff, and athletes, it’s for co-marketing dollars, we can do a lot with that money.” The activist trustees also see a conflict of interest with Kraft's reportedly close friendship with Adidas marketing executive Chris McGuire, who negotiated the deal. North Texas AD Jared Mosley has proposed a 40% student athletic fee increase that, if passed, would roll out in increments over four years, with the fee starting at $20 before gradually increasing to $25. Mosley: “There are disparities, and we are trying to close the gap so that we can continue to remain competitive and leverage this platform of athletics, which basically [...] shines a bright light on everything. I just think with the landscape of college athletics, when you look at Texas State and UTSA [...], they have a built-in advantage from a funding standpoint currently that we would like to close that gap.” Per North Texas Daily’s Alejandra Osegueda, in order to implement a tuition fee of at least 10%, it must first be approved by a majority vote of the student body. The SGA would first create a piece of legislation that senators vote on to decide whether or not to organize a student body election, which could occur as soon as next month. (link)
