Baseball to be Added to Alfred University in Spring of 2024

ALFRED, NY – Associate Vice President for Student Experience, Athletics and Recreation Deb Steward, announced that Alfred University will once again offer baseball as a varsity sport beginning in the spring of 2024.

Baseball was previously listed as a club program with Alfred University, participating in the National Club Baseball Association (NCBA).

"Our club team has been active, and our plan was to add baseball in a couple years upon the completion of the Saxon Hill Sports Complex project," Steward said. "However, with the closure of Medaille University and our subsequent teach-out partnership, we re-evaluated our timeline for baseball. We are committed to joining forces and building a successful Saxon baseball program while helping our student-athletes pursue their academic passions."

The Alfred University baseball team will compete as a member of the NCAA Division III and Empire 8.  The Empire 8 has six institutions that sponsor baseball.

Alfred University baseball has a rich history dating back to 1886 when the program was first introduced on campus. The program had four representatives go on to play professionally including Greg Prusia who was the first Alfred University player to be drafted to Major League Baseball and was selected in the 36th round of the 1988 Amateur Draft by the Kansas City Royals. Prusia attended Alfred University from 1984-87 where he competed in baseball and football. In 2003, he was inducted into the Alfred University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Until the completion of the Saxon Hill Sports Complex, Alfred University is expected to practice and host games within the local area.
