Cal Poly hires Stanford Deputy AD for External Relations Carter Henderson as its next AD. President Jeffrey D. NCAA President Charlie Baker helped kick off the 2026 Men’s Final Four festivities in Indianapolis, praising the city as a premier host: “I go into this fully believing that it will be unforgettable, because Indianapolis has always been a premier host and other cities, by the way, are working hard to catch up.” Meanwhile, NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy that expansion conversations are ongoing, as officials weigh several factors. Portnoy notes that “among issues for the NCAA to sort out are TV inventory and possible compensation from the addition of games. The NCAA’s deal with CBS/TNT, which runs through 2032, doesn’t stipulate the networks shell out any more money if the tournament were to expand to 72 or 76 teams.” Gavitt: “There’s a lot that goes into it because we have to figure out a way to pay for it. There are some things going back to [NCAA] convention that we’ve considered with our partners that would give them opportunities with our [Corporate Champions and Partners] Program that aren’t there now that could help be a deal that would make sense for all parties involved. Some of those discussions are still ongoing. Nothing is determined, by any stretch, but the whole evaluation is inclusive of all of that, because if you don’t have it all figured out – financially, logistically, operationally, marketing promotions – then it would lead you to an outcome that you wouldn’t do it.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds context to reports of the potential privatization of the FCS Playoffs via an investment from Sequence Equity: “For one, according to NCAA Rule 31.2.1.1, all NCAA members are required to participate, if selected, in the NCAA championship or in no postseason at all. The decision to eliminate the FCS playoff would require approval from its sport-specific committee, the FCS Oversight, followed by approval from the new NCAA Administrative Committee, and then, after that, the Division I Board of Directors. However, there is another hurdle: moving the FCS playoffs out from under the NCAA umbrella may come with consequences, as it may impact the NCAA’s $115 million media rights package with ESPN — a deal that incorporates 40 other sport championships. What happens now? It remains to be seen, but FCS officials are expected to continue talks over the coming weeks with the earliest implementation date of 2027. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with a SCORE Act update: “Over the last few days, the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten sent letters to Congress in support of the SCORE Act. The ACC is finalizing its own letter and intends to send it to lawmakers. Notable given the pushback from some conferences seeking changes to the legislation.” (link)

American Commissioner Tim Pernetti covers a wide range of topics on the Ovies & Giglio Show, including engaging with private equity/private capital firms. Pernetti explains there has “not been a successful business in American history that hasn't taken outside capital to accelerate their growth. Some work out well, some don't. You know, there are hostile takeovers. There's leverage buyouts. The thing I think that the industry needs to warm up to is there's a hundred ways to cut it, right? Like private equity, the word equity implies ownership and control. And I think that's what people worry about. … What I would say about it is I don't think anybody has fully determined how it should play out. My own personal experience in a couple of businesses that I had the opportunity and the fortune to run when I was within the Endeavor family or IMG played out really, really well. And I'll tell you why. Not about the money. If you pick the right partner in private capital, you get access to expertise and people that you don't get in the college business. And to me, this is not just about cash. It's about how do you find people that can bring capital to the table and help you grow your enterprise? Because if they're going to get in the boat with you to grow it, then why shouldn't everybody share in the upside?” Lots more. (link)
