Construction underway for new UMaine Field Hockey complex

Orono, Maine -- Construction for the new University of Maine field hockey complex, scheduled to open in August of 2023, is well underway with several developments completed through the winter and spring seasons.

"We are incredible grateful to the Harold Alfond Foundation for their commitment to our student-athletes," says field hockey head coach, Josette Babineau. "Once completed, the UMaine field hockey complex will be the best facility in our conference and one of the top facilities throughout New England. Our new complex will benefit our current players and the future of UMaine field hockey, but also will serve as a source of pride for our alumnae."

One of the first steps in the construction was the installation of underground utilities, including new perimeter drainage. Concrete walls have been installed at the team bench areas and along the grandstand, featuring a brick facade.

Construction on the field surface, bleachers, and press box all began in early May and will continue through the summer. The turf surface is scheduled to be laid in July.

"Installing the proper turf replacement for our facility is incredibly important to our game and a big investment on its own," says Babineau. "What we are most excited for is a new complex surrounding the turf surface. The field will be properly enclosed with a cement border, fencing, and padding. Their will be a new, modernized press box and video platform along with enclosed team benches and additional equipment storage areas for our gear. Our fans will benefit from elevated bleacher seating along with a large section of chairback seats."

The new UMaine field hockey complex is part of the University of Maine's transformative $110 million athletic facilities master plan. The initiative honors Harold Alfond's legacy of support for Maine education and athletics by providing modern facilities for all 17 varsity programs at Maine's only Division I athletic program, and improving the overall UMaine student experience.

In October of 2021, the Harold Alfond Foundation announced an historic $500 million investment in Maine and its people. The University of Maine System is to receive $240 million over 10-12 years, including $90 million in support for UMaine's $110 million athletics facilities master plan.
