Scott Ames to Retire After 34 Years at WestConn

5/23/2023 9:34:00 AM

DANBURY, Conn. - After 34 years at Western Connecticut State University, Scott Ames will retire from his post as Associate Athletic Director for Communications and Compliance on September 1 of this year.  He has been a member of the WestConn Athletics Department since August of 1989.

Ames began his career as the school's Sports Information Specialist then took on the role Associate Athletic Director, with new duties as the Compliance Director in 2007.

Prior to arriving in Danbury, Ames was the first full-time Sports Information Director at University of Bridgeport, for two years (1987-89) and held internships at Colgate University, as the Information Director of the Colonial League (the inaugural year of the Patriot League - Fall 1986), and at Brown University in Providence (Spring 1987).

Ames was a four-year student worker in the Sports Information Office at his alma mater Southern Connecticut State University for legendary SID Rick Leddy.  If not for the friendship he had with Leddy, the Newtown, Conn. resident may never had made his way into the fantastic profession of Sports Information.

The soon-to-be 60-year-old native of Old Saybrook, Conn. graduated from SCSU with a degree in Corporate Video Communications in 1986.

He has developed countless friendships and relationships along the way but none more wonderful than the one he has with his wife of 33 years Christine and four adult children Ryan (31), Mallory (28), Max (23) and Shaylen (20).

"I missed a lot of birthdays and family events over the last 34 years as all of my children were born in months during the academic calendar," stated Ames.  "Well, my calendar will become much clearer come September, so I have some making up to do."

Ames is forever grateful for the opportunity that former Director of Athletics Ed Farrington gave him back in the summer of 1989 and his close relationship with so many special friends and colleagues like Joe Mingachos and the rest of the "Work Freaks."
