Prairie View A&M is discontinuing its men’s and women’s tennis programs, effective immediately. From PVAMU’s release: “For decades, PVAMU's tennis programs have fostered competitive excellence, character development, and academic achievement. This change in no way diminishes that proud legacy, however, the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics—including rising costs, facility demands, and the need for programmatic focus—necessitated tough decisions. This step allows the university to prioritize investment in core programs that serve the largest number of student-athletes and align with PVAMU's long-term strategic goals.” (link)
The DI Board of Directors approved a proposal from the Decision-Making Working Group that “simplifies the governance structure for the division, increases student-athlete representation throughout all levels of decision-making, and provides greater authority to sport-specific committees over rules that impact their respective sports. The changes are expected to be phased in over the coming months, starting September 1.” As circulated previously, the new structure will comprise 30 Division I committees, including 19 committees that govern each Division I championship sport, a 32% reduction in the total number of Division I committees. Student-athletes will now have voting seats on almost every committee, which is an increase of 40 total seats, doubling the total number of student-athlete seats. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "Today's changes were carefully developed by student-athlete leaders and representatives from all subgroups to enable faster decisions and double student-athlete representation for DI, while ensuring access to championships and funding streams remain consistent for every school in the division. From unprecedented financial benefits to health and academic guarantees, the NCAA is making changes to do more for student-athletes, and today's changes protect what brings DI together and updates the decision-making to meet this new era." The board also adopted a resolution specifying that for a five-year period no changes can be made to membership requirements for existing DI schools and conferences. (link)
The Board of Directors on Tuesday also introduced a proposal that would create three additional units in both the Men's and Women's Basketball Performance Funds. If the measure is adopted by member schools and conferences, each team participating in a championship game would receive one additional unit, and the national champions would receive the final unit. When combined with the recently approved women's basketball distribution funds, the NCAA would distribute more than $191M in new revenue distributions to DI members over the next seven years, starting in 2026. North Carolina AD/Men’s Basketball Committee Chair Bubba Cunningham: "Rewarding teams and the conferences they represent for wins they earn on the biggest of stages has always seemed like a sensible thing to do. With each conference annually receiving north of $300K per unit over a six-year period, and with three additional units up for grabs for competing in and winning the national championship game, once fully implemented, roughly $6M will be distributed on an annual basis to the leagues whose teams win games at the Men's Final Four. This is a positive step in further supporting conferences, institutions and student-athletes." (link)
A pair of announcements for Alice Lloyd. The Eagles have joined the CAC after being members of the River States since 2005. VP of Student Services Scott Cornett: “We are excited about this opportunity. For a while, we have had some issues involving scheduling because we have been an outlier to several conferences. By joining the CAC, it gives us greater flexibility, allowing us to have a strong schedule while giving us greater control over our travel. The NAIA has suspended Arkansas Baptist, Morris and Rust from all postseason competition until all ROA/Year-End reports have been submitted successfully. The association has placed Faulkner on probation for 2025-26 due to violations of recruiting bylaws. (link)
Southern Oregon has declared financial exigency and will implement a series of major cuts: $1.1M from athletics, $10.5M over the next few years, 15 academic majors and 64.45 FTEs. From the university’s draft plan: “Ultimately, SOU needs to be a smaller university to work within a framework where revenues are always greater than expenses. As challenging as this work is, we need to envision a smaller, more resilient university – one that can withstand strong headwinds. If SOU FORWARD were to be considered the first of two phases, this current transformation effort would be phase two, which envisions a $60 million university as opposed to our current $71 million university.” President Rick Bailey during a campus conversation last week: “The challenges that we face as an institution and the things that we’re going to have to do to transform are so big that this pathway was the only way through it. And so today, we are declaring as an institution exigency. It’s going to allow us to do the transformative things that we need to do as an institution. We’re not closing, it’s not bankruptcy, it isn’t even close to that, but it’s a mechanism that allows for transformation.” (link)
