Terrapin Athletics

From The Desk Of Damon Evans

Dear Terps,

The 2022-23 athletic season was a reminder of why I am truly proud to be the athletics director at the University of Maryland. Every one of our 20 varsity programs excelled. Maryland was one of two schools in the nation to win a football bowl game, an NCAA men's basketball tournament game and an NCAA women's basketball tournament game. Overall, we have 11 teams that will qualify for NCAA Tournaments or have NCAA Championship participants.

Earlier this week, we had what I call our "National Championship" for student-athletes as 117 Terrapins graduated from the University of Maryland. Congratulations to the Class of 2023!

This spring has been a notable one. Maryland Softball capped a historic season, going 38-19, its best season in more than a decade. Maryland Baseball won its second straight Big Ten championship and we take on Nebraska tonight in the Big Ten Tournament second round in Omaha. For the second year in a row, Coach Rob Vaughn was honored as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. And, how about this: Big Ten Player of the Year and expected MLB First Round Draft Pick Matt Shaw broke the school record for career home runs, a record that stood for more than 35 years!

Like I said, our teams gave us plenty to celebrate last year. Even as we relish the final few games of this season, we start to turn our attention to the future, to build upon our incredible momentum.

Today, we are 100 days from our football opener vs. Towson when we will see the return of Script Terps for our football program. A cherished logo for so many of you, Script Terps will adorn all of our football uniforms next season. Be on the lookout for the upcoming issue of One Maryland Magazine for the story on the history of Script Terps. And this year will also mark the return of Friday Night Football – when we play arch-rival Virginia on Friday, Sept. 15. We're experiencing an upswing in new sales and season ticket renewals heading into the summer. If you haven't yet secured your seats for next season, don't miss out on all of the excitement – go here to get your tickets.

Next month, we will officially break ground on the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center, a state-of-the-art training facility for our men's and women's basketball programs.

In the fall, we will open the recently expanded Field Hockey & Women's Lacrosse Complex and will begin construction on indoor training and development facilities for baseball and softball.

As much as there was to celebrate in 2022-23, there will be much more to cheer for in the years to come. We are proud to compete for you, for our university and for our state.

Go Terps!
