Edwards Resigns as Softball Coach at UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, MAINE – Alissa Edwards resigned as the head women's softball coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation Dan Kane announced on Monday.

Edwards steps down after four seasons at the helm of the Owls softball program to take the head softball position at Mars Hill University, a NCAA Division II school in Mars Hill, NC. Edwards started at UMPI as a student athlete.  In the summer of 2019, after earning her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, UMPI hired Edwards as the Head Softball Coach making her one of the youngest NCAA head softball coaches in the nation.

Unfortunately, Edward's first season was canceled one day before the team was to embark on their spring trip due to the COVID pandemic. Through Coach Edward's leadership, the team came back in the spring of 2021 to have a very successful season, where Edwards was named North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in her first season of competition. Following a rebuilding year in 2022, the Owls finished 3rd this past season in the NAC East Division, qualifying for the NAC playoffs for the first time since 2019.

"We are very appreciative of the hard work, dedication, and leadership Coach Edwards has shown during her four years at the head of our softball program," said Kane.  "We are extremely proud of Alissa as an alum, colleague, and friend and wish her the best as she continues her college coaching career at the division II level."

A national search for Edward's replacement will begin immediately.  In the meantime, all current, incoming, or potential softball student athletes can contact Coach Dan Kane at Daniel.c.kane@maine.edu if they have any questions.
