GRINNELL, Iowa – Not only was it raining outside Thursday night, but it also was inside – raining 3-pointers, that is.
Grinnell College's men's basketball team set an NCAA record, regardless of division, with 111 attempts from 3-point land in a 124-67 victory over Emmaus Bible College at Darby Gymnasium.
Even more amazing, every single Pioneer field goal attempt was a 3-point try, also believed to be an NCAA record.
After struggling from beyond the arc in the first half, the Pioneers lit up the nets with 51.1 percent field goal shooting in the second half to finish at 36 percent for the game.
Grinnell finished 40-of-111 from 3-point land, with the total made ranking second in Pioneer history only behind its NCAA record of 42 established four years ago – also against Emmaus.
Adam Phillips '23 scorched the nets for 36 points on 12-of-24 shooting, while
Moze Thurmgreene '23 tallied a career-best 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. Also in double digits were
Aiden Gilbert '23 with 18 points and
Jackson Leone '25 with 12.
Dillon Gestring '25 added career-highs of eight rebounds and four steals, while
Tolu Johnson '25 and
Nicholas Courtney '26 each had seven boards. Courtney's total was a career-high.
Zach Rosen '26 had a career-best 10 assists and Johnson had career-highs of three steals and five assists. Gilbert contributed six assists.
Grinnell led 48-32 at halftime and was up 57-44 in the second half before exploding with an incredible 29-point run in just a bit over three minutes.
Gilbert began the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 15:20 mark before Thurmgreene caught fire, draining three consecutive treys to stretch Grinnell's lead to 69-44.
Not to be outdone, Leone fired in three buckets to increase Grinnell's cushion to 78-44. Gestring added two free throws and Phillips two treys to complete the run, putting Grinnell ahead 86-44 with 12:15 left in the game.
In the second half, Grinnell eclipsed not only the NCAA Division III record of 91 3-point attempts by Greenville in 2019, but the overall mark of 109 established by Troy in 1992.
Grinnell improved to 4-6 with the win and Emmaus dipped to 4-4.
Grinnell is back in action again Saturday against Westminster College of Missouri. Tip-off at Darby Gymnasium is at 3 p.m.
