Puget Sound lifts "Interim" tag for Cox

TACOMA, Washington – Puget Sound Director of Athletics Amy Hackett has announced that the Loggers are lifting the "Interim" tag for women's soccer head coach Stephanie Cox.

"We are excited to have Stephanie continue to lead our women's soccer program after the successful 2022 season," said Hackett. "She has shown her ability to win at every level of the game, and we know our student-athletes will continue to benefit from her leadership and inspiration in a program that has been among the best in the country throughout Puget Sound's NCAA D-III era."

Cox was named the 2022 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Loggers to a 16-3-1 overall record in the regular season. Puget Sound clinched an at-large bid for the NCAA D-III Championship.

Cox and the Loggers earned statement victories in the season with a couple of wins over teams nationally ranked by United Soccer Coaches. Puget Sound beat No. 22 Emory in the second game of the season, and then toppled No. 24 Pomona-Pitzer the following week.

Eight Loggers earned All-NWC nods in 2022, and Ava Cholakian was named the Offensive Player of the Year. The senior scored 17 goals this season – the most by a Logger since 2009.

I am delighted to be continuing as head coach for the Puget Sound women's soccer program," said Cox. "I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with the student-athletes and staff, and I appreciated how committed we all were to creating an environment where there was growth and unity throughout the season. I look forward to continuing the strong tradition of what it means to be a Logger, and building on the program's past success for years to come."

Cox won an Olympic gold medal as a member of the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) in 2008. She was also a member of the national teams that placed third in 2007 World Cup, and second in the 2011 World Cup. Overall, Cox played 89 games for USWNT.

Cox also played in U.S. professional leagues for several years. Her most recent stint was with the OL Reign in Seattle (2019-21). In addition to playing professionally, Cox was the head coach for Gig Harbor Girls Soccer from 2015 through 2019.

Cox competed collegiately at the University of Portland, where she and the Pilots won the NCAA national title in 2005.
