Travis Spencer Named Women's Wrestling Coach

Travis Spencer has been named women's wrestling head coach and assistant athletic director for marketing and engagement at Muhlenberg College.

Spencer is Muhlenberg's first-ever head coach of women's wrestling. Muhlenberg recently added women's wrestling as its 23rd varsity sport and is scheduled to begin full dual meet competition in the fall of 2024.

Spencer will have an immediate opportunity to hire an assistant coach to support the program's development, as the College received a Division III Coaching Enhancement Grant from the NCAA. The grant is designed to support member institutions that are committed to enhancing ethnic minority and gender representation in newly created assistant coaching positions for any NCAA-sponsored sport.

"I am excited to be the first women's wrestling head coach at Muhlenberg," said Spencer. "Having invested nearly 40 years in the sport in all capacities, I believe that we can build an outstanding women's program here in the Lehigh Valley. I would like to thank Lynn Tubman and the Muhlenberg search committee for their efforts.

"My program will be centered around student-athletes who are passionate and hard-working while representing themselves and Muhlenberg to the highest level. I will create a distinct and engaging culture that will allow these women to be successful on the mat and in the classroom. I look forward to the work ahead."

Spencer is a 1998 graduate of the University of Scranton, where he was a three-year captain and two-year regional placewinner in wrestling. After serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 1998 to 2004, he was a team ambassador for wrestling at Lehigh University while working in the athletic department as assistant director for athletics partnership and director of business development. As team ambassador, Spencer coordinated staff and managed all wrestling events in addition to assisting with all marketing and promotions for the nationally prominent Lehigh wrestling program.

After leaving Lehigh in 2018, Spencer spent four years as Director of Athletics at Centenary University, where he provided oversight for a program that qualified a wrestler for the NCAA Championships every season he was there.

Spencer, who earned master's degrees in physical education from Old Dominion University in 2005 and in education leadership from Lehigh in 2019, also has contributed to wrestling as a technician for camps and clinics and PIAA wrestling official.
