DENTON, Texas (June 7, 2023) – On Wednesday, June 7, the Texas Woman's University Athletic Department announced the promotion of Jess Newman to Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.

Newman has served as the Pioneers Associate Head Athletic Trainer since July 2021. During this time, she oversaw aspects of health care for various TWU athletic teams. Most recently, she served as the primary trainer for wrestling and softball, while assisting on the care of all nine Pioneer teams. 

"Sports Medicine is a crucial part of our student-athletes' safety and well-being," Madison Seaver, Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations, said. "We are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to hire from within our department and promote Jess Newman to the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine role. Jess's internal, working knowledge of the department and extensive Athletic Training background has assisted in the development of her multifaceted approach to Sports Medicine, where she prioritizes many areas of care for our student-athletes including Sports Performance, Sports Nutrition and Sports Psychology. We are excited for Jess to take on this leadership role and continue to place our student-athletes' well-being as our number one priority."

In her new role, Newman will lead the TWU Athletic Training staff and department and continue to provide coverage to our student-athletes and teams. Newman aims to prioritize total care of the student-athlete through a focus not just on physical health, but mental and emotional health as well while guiding our student-athletes to success in competition and in life. 

"I am profoundly honored to be entrusted with the opportunity to oversee and lead the TWU Sports Medicine Department," Newman said. "I am thrilled to continue to build our team and to grow the resources we provide to our student-athletes. I look forward to ensuring our Texas Woman's student-athletes are receiving the highest quality of care that furthers their success and overall well-being.

Through her various roles in athletic training, Newman has gained a comprehensive list of skills and attributes, which she plans to utilize to guide the TWU Athletic Training staff into successful coverage of Pioneer student-athletes with the mission of service at the core.

Prior to coming to TWU in 2021, Newman worked at Colorado School of Mines as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for seven years, where she was the primary trainer for men's soccer, baseball and men's and women's swim. She additionally oversaw the training facility inventory and budget and managed day-to-day operations. As the primary for men's soccer, Newman provided host athletic training services for three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournaments and two NCAA South Central Regional Tournaments.

Before Colorado School of Mines, Newman attended the University of Idaho where she earned her Master of Science in Movement and Leisure Sciences and worked as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer, assisting in the health coverage of Idaho's 16 NCAA Division I athletic teams.

Newman earned her undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, from New Mexico State University. While earning her degree, she worked as an athletic training student assistant. 

Newman continues to work to grow her athletic training knowledge and expertise through her membership with the National Athletic Trainers' Association, where she is board certified, Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association and Texas State Athletic Trainers' Association.
