GSC Holds 2023 Spring Meeting in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Gulf South Conference held its annual GSC Spring Meetings, bringing together the GSC's Presidents, Athletics Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Faculty Athletic Representatives and Compliance Directors, May 30-June 3 at the Hilton Pensacola Resort.

During the week's meeting the conference covered a range of topics in addition to holding its Hall of Fame ceremony and annual Top Ten Award banquet on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Among the topics covered, the conference examined membership and the need to bolster numbers in specific sponsored sports including football, lacrosse and track & field. During the conversation, GSC Commissioner Matt Wilson made it clear that addressing football is a primary focus of conference membership discussions, however that the conference must also consider other championship sports when evaluating potential options.

The GSC Presidents, who also serve as the league's Board of Directors, met on Friday morning, before entering into a general session with the other administrators and school representatives. 

During the Board of Directors' (BOD) initial gathering, it took action a number of proposals, approving the football instant replay and addition of a specialist position to the women's lacrosse all-conference selections. Additionally, it agreed to clarifying language for the Academic Honor and Champion Scholar-Athlete awards, as well as All-Conference and baseball utility position criteria. All changes will be effective beginning in 2023-24.

In the general session, the BOD received committee reports from the league's various groups including sport-specific coaches committee as well as other constituencies.

In addition, the GSC agreed to delay the adoption of its new five-year strategic plan as it continues to be developed with the assistance if Collegiate Consulting. In the interim, the conference's strategic priorities will be focused on membership and the expanded media rights agreement with FloSports.
