Derrick McKenzie Announced as Interim Head Track and Field & Cross Country Coach

LINCOLN, Neb. (June 1, 2023) - Nebraska Wesleyan University's Derrick McKenzie, will serve as the interim head coach of the track and field & cross country teams, effective immediately, Director of Athletics Dwight Merilatt announced. The elevation of McKenzie, who has overseen the Prairie Wolves' sprinters/relays program for the last eight seasons, will provide stability for the program and the student-athletes, following the retirement of Ted Bulling on May 31.

"I am excited to announce that Derrick McKenzie will serve as our Interim Head Coach for Track & Field and Cross Country," Merilatt said. "I look forward to his leadership of both programs and appreciate his dedication to our coaches and student-athletes."

McKenzie's dedication to Nebraska Wesleyan University as an assistant coach has led to 10 NCAA DIII national champions, 22 conference champions, 39 NCAA DIII All-Americans, and 84 NCAA DIII All-Region honorees. In 2019, McKenzie was recognized for his efforts as he was awarded 2019 USTFCCCA Central Region Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year.

"Four years as an athlete went fast; eight years coaching with Ted Bulling has gone even faster," McKenzie said. "I am fortunate and grateful to have this opportunity at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Focusing on the importance of academics, personal development, having fun, and achieving our athletic potential will be the main principles our programs will continue to strive for. Thank you Ted for everything!"

McKenzie, a 2012 graduate, was a four-year letter winner for the Nebraska Wesleyan University track and field program. He was a seven-time All-GPAC performer in track & field and a two-time NCAA National Qualifier in the 400 hurdles. Additionally, he was a 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and was also a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.
