Long Chosen as Next Head Coach of Men’s and Women’s Tennis

June 2, 2023

June 2, 2023 – Director of Athletics Denise Udelhofen ('90) has officially announced Cam Long as Loras College's next head coach for both men's and women's tennis.

A Dubuque native, Long comes to Loras with extensive coaching experience in the Midwest, most recently as the head coach for both men's and women's tennis at Concordia University in Nebraska, an NAIA institution.

"Cam's background in Dubuque and the American Rivers Conference make him great fit for our men's and women's tennis programs," Udelhofen said. "His energy and excitement for the sport of tennis and working with our student-athletes was evident in his interview. We are excited to welcome him back to Dubuque."

"I am excited about joining Loras College and being back in Dubuque," Long said. "I've had family members and many friends come through Loras and know how great of a community it is. Being from Dubuque and having experience playing in the American Rivers Conference, I believe this is a great fit for me and I can't wait to move forward."

In two years leading both Concordia programs, Long coached seven Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) all-conference players and 13 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic players. This past season, Long's women's team set a new school record for doubles wins in a season as part of a GPAC title for his top women's doubles team. That team boasted the No. 4-ranked women's singles player and No. 10-ranked women's doubles team in the ITA Central West Region.

Prior to his time in Seward, Neb., Long spent one spring season as a men's and women's assistant coach at Centre College in Danville, Ky., where he helped coach eight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) All-Conference players. In that spring 2021 season, the men's team qualified for its first ever SAA Championship appearance while the women's team made its third such appearance. The Colonel women were ranked as high as No. 36 in the ITA national rankings that year, which marked the program's first-ever national ranking, while the men got as high as No. 13 in their regional rankings, which was their highest ever.

Long's background also includes time as a teaching assistant while he was a graduate student at the University of Iowa, where he earned a Master of Arts in Sport and Recreation Management. His experience in sports branches into other event management and athletic communication roles, including stints as a Sports Information Intern at Clarke University, a Gameday Stringer for the Clinton Lumberkings, and as a tennis instructor for the City of Dubuque and Luther College, his alma mater.

Long was a four-year letter winner for the Luther men's tennis team from 2015-19 and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during his time with the Norse. He is a graduate of Wahlert Catholic High School.

"Loras has had much recent success in all sports," Long said. "The goals for the program should be to continue building on its current foundation and being competitive within the conference each year."
