John Chiaramonte Elevated to Lead Siena Tennis Programs

Associate Head Coach Takes Reins Following Eight Years on Staff

LOUDONVILLE, NY – John Chiaramonte, who has played an integral role in the ascension of the Siena Tennis programs over the past eight years, has been elevated to head coach of Siena Men's and Women's Tennis. The 33-year-old Chiaramonte, who was previously promoted to associate head coach of both programs in February, helped lead the men's program to its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament Championship this spring and the women's squad to the program's second title in 2021.

"We're pleased with the direction of both tennis programs, and John's contributions over the past eight years have been a big part of the development and success of Siena Tennis," said Siena College Vice President and Director of Athletics John D'Argenio. "Our tennis programs have stood out both academically in the classroom as well as competitively on the tennis courts. This success is a testament to John's work ethic, drive, and enthusiasm toward enriching the lives of our Saints."

Chiaramonte first joined Siena Men's and Women's Tennis prior to the start of the 2015-16 season, and served as the right-hand man throughout the tenure of the school's first full time men's and women's tennis coach, Jeff Osborn, who retired last month. Chiaramonte played a key role in assisting Osborn during the most successful stretches in program history, molding both teams into realizing their respective championship potential.

"I would like to thank Mr. D'Argenio for this opportunity," said Chiaramonte. "Siena College has such a storied culture of success in athletics. I am excited to continue down the path that Coach Osborn has pioneered, and I look forward to taking both the men's and women's tennis teams to the next level. I'd also like to thank my parents Maureen and Joseph for their support."

After going winless during his first season, the men's tennis program has continued to improve annually during Chiaramonte's time on staff, culminating with a dominant two-year stretch. The Saints won a program-record 14 matches and earned their first MAAC Tournament berth in 12 years last spring, laying the foundation for the program's first MAAC Tournament Championship and a share of the regular season title in April. Chiaramonte, who has played a vital role in both the recruiting and development efforts, aided in the success of MAAC Player of the Year Dante Russo and MAAC Rookie of the Year Edward Vo.

Chiaramonte has helped guide Siena Women's Tennis to an 86-62 (.581) overall record, including a stellar 32-13 (.711) mark in MAAC competition in his eight years with the program. The Saints have both posted a .500 or better conference record and qualified for the MAAC Tournament in each year since Chiaramonte joined the staff. In 2016-17, the women's team made history by achieving the best start to a season by any program in Siena Athletics history, winning their first 15 matches en route to posting a program single-season best .900 winning percentage (18-2), while advancing to the MAAC Championship Match. The Saints later persevered during the COVID-affected 2020-21 season to claim the program's second MAAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

The men's and women's tennis success on the courts has been rivaled by their academic achievements during Chiaramonte's time on staff. Both programs posted perfect 100% graduation success rates according to the most recent annual NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) Report released in November, which reflects the percentage of student athletes who enrolled at Siena as freshmen in the Fall of 2015 who went on to graduate, coinciding with Chiaramonte's tenure. Moreover, the women's team led all Siena Athletics programs with a 3.74 team grade-point average during the most recent Spring 2023 semester, and continues to pace the department with a 3.69 cumulative GPA. The men's team also achieved an impressive 3.36 GPA this spring, to raise their overall number to 3.13.

In addition to his time at Siena, Chiaramonte has been coaching for over 15 years at various levels, and has coached high-level local juniors, several of whom have gone on to play tennis at the Division I level.

Chiaramonte, who resides in Loudonville and attended La Salle Institute in Troy, is a 2012 graduate of Wake Forest University where he earned his B.A. in Political Science and English. A practicing attorney at Pursuit, a small business lending institution, he earned his JD from Albany Law School in 2016.
