McGlinchey Steps Down as Head Football Coach

LIBERTY, Mo. – After three seasons at the helm of the William Jewell College football program, Mike McGlinchey has stepped down to take a position on the staff at Division I University of San Diego. Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator Neil Linhart has been named interim head coach.

McGlinchey will join the staff at San Diego under the recently hired Brandon Moore, with whom he worked during his time at Colorado School of Mines.

"Coach McGlinchey came to Jewell and made a significant impact on the trajectory of this program over the last three years," said Director of Athletics Tom Eisenhauer. "He took over a program that was in need of strong leadership and is leaving it better than he found it. We wish him and his family all the best as he takes the next step in his career."

McGlinchey was hired in January of 2020 and took over the program just as the COVID-19 pandemic had begun in the United States. In three seasons with the Cardinals, McGlinchey went 2-23 but those two wins were significant. Jewell defeated Kentucky Wesleyan in September 2022 for their first win since 2019 and followed up with a victory over Quincy in the season finale for their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win since 2018. He coached 17 All-GLVC players, including three first teamers.

Linhart has been a member of the coaching staff since March of 2020 and has been an integral part of the program ever since. Prior to arriving on The Hill, he was the offensive coordinator at South Dakota School of Mines for two seasons. While there, the Hardrockers' offense broke or tied 27 offensive school records and led NCAA-II in passing yards per game. The rest of the coaching staff will remain in place as well and the College will look to fill open positions as quickly as possible.

"I would like to thank Dr. MacLeod Walls and Mr. Eisenhauer for the opportunity to be the Interim Head Football Coach here at William Jewell," said Linhart. "Over the last three years working with Coach McGlinchey we have built a solid foundation and are ready to take the next step. We are coming off of a great spring and looking to build off the improvements made heading into the summer. We are excited for what the future holds for Cardinal football."
