Megan Campbell Named Brooklyn's New Head Women's Basketball Coach

Brooklyn, NY---Announced by Brooklyn College Director of Athletics, Erik Smiles, BC Women's Basketball assistant coach for the past two seasons and Brooklyn alum, Megan Campbell, has been named the program's new Head Coach.  Campbell replaces her former coach, Alex Lang, who recently stepped down after 20 seasons at the helm of the program.  She inherits a conference and regional power that has won the CUNYAC Championship and gone on to the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons.

"The culture and family atmosphere of the Women's Basketball program is so outstanding that we wanted to make sure the next head coach of this program understood it and would continue to embrace it," Smiles would say. "As a former player and current assistant coach, we felt no one had a better understanding of that culture then Megan."

An assistant coach for the Bulldogs the last two seasons, Campbell helped guide Brooklyn to back-to-back conference titles and the program's first ever NCAA Tournament win in 2022.  Brooklyn would also go undefeated against conference opponents both seasons.

"Meg was a vital part of our staff these past two seasons, and our players are excited to play for her," said Alex Lang, who recently announced that he would be stepping down as head coach after 20 seasons at the helm.  "Meg is a great person, was a great player and assistant coach, and I am confident she will be a tremendous head coach.  She is a hard worker, loves the game of basketball and is a genuine person, all qualities that will make her an excellent head coach.  This program has become so much more than just a team that has won, but more of an extended family, with so many who take pride in our accomplishments.  The fact that the next head coach is someone who has been both a player and assistant coach, and has the love and admiration of so many within the program.  I am excited for this new chapter for Brooklyn College Women's Basketball and cannot wait to see the team in action next year."

Highly decorated as a player at Brooklyn from 2013-2015, the Lackawanna College transfer made an immediate impact, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots as a junior.  She would go on to be named a First Team CUNYAC All-Star, First Team All-ECAC, Second Team All-Met, and Third Team All-Region while helping BC to a Runner-Up finish in the ECAC Championship Tournament.  As a senior, she averaged close to a double-double (14.8 ppg and 9.4 rpg) and would go on to be named a First Team CUNYAC All-Star, First Team All-ECAC, Third Team All-Met, and Third Team All-Region while helping BC to an ECAC Championship Tournament title.  Just as accomplished academically, Campbell would earn Capital One/CoSIDA Academic Third Team All-American accolades.

"Brooklyn College has had a major impact on my life, it is an honor to be named head coach of a program that means so much to me," Campbell would comment on her appointment.  "Alex [Lang] has had a tremendous amount of success over his 20-year career.  He has laid a strong foundation that I look forward to building upon."

After graduating from Brooklyn, Coach Campbell continued her playing career in Ireland for the Institute of Technology Carlow where she helped the team to a Women's National League Championship in 2017.  While overseas, she also coached the Old Leighlin girls team to an All-Ireland Club championship.

In addition to her experience at Brooklyn and in Ireland, Campbell spent the Summer of 2021 on the AAU circuit coaching with Castle Athletics.

"Megan stood out to me not only as someone who has a great grasp of basketball, but understood recruiting to Brooklyn College and has firsthand knowledge of the academic pedigree, strong alumni base and the beautiful campus here at Brooklyn," Smiles would go on to say.  "Her energy, passion, and love for the BC Women's Basketball program and the college as a whole were really evident."

Campbell earned both her bachelor's in Physical Education and master's in Education from Brooklyn College and is a physical education teacher for the NYC Department of Education.  She has also been an adjunct professor at BC in the SEED department since 2021.

"I am excited to get to work and help the program to grow!"
