Jones Earns Spot on U20 World Team

SPOKANE, Wash. (Apr. 14-16, 2023) - The Cardinal Wrestling Club (CWC) which featured 18 North Central College women's wrestlers, competed at the U20/U23 World Team Trials this past weekend where twelve wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes while Amani Jones earned her spot on the U20 World Team. 

Sydney Petzinger kicked off the action for CWC at 53 kg in the U20 division by pinning Izabella Frezzo of New Jersey in the second round after receiving a first round bye. The two-time All-American moved into the quarterfinals by defeating Juliana Diaz of Florida by an 11-1 technical fall before defeating Washington's Salyna Shotwell 10-0. Petziger would fall in the semifinals to Katie Gomez of California but would bounce back with her third technical fall of the tournament, defeating Avery Ashley of Texas 10-0 to move into the third place match. Petzinger would secure a third place finish with a 13-6 decision win over Alexis Montes of Texas, making her a two-time USA Wrestling All-American. 

Jones, the 123-pound National Runner-up, received a bye in the first round before defeating California's Emarie Katelyn Bolosan by a 10-0 technical fall in the second round of the 55 kg bracket. In the quarterfinals, Jones only needed 51 seconds to punch her tickets to the semifinals as she pinned Presley Anderson of California. Facing Ella Jauregui of California in the semifinals, Jones punched her ticket to the championship bout as she beat Jauregui by a 13-6 decision. Jones has made the championship bout three times in her career, falling in the last two but would avenge those losses by defeating Virgina Foard by a 11-1 technical fall in match one and a 12-3 decision in match two to earn a spot on the World Team. Jones will compete in a ranking tournament in Spain in July and then in Warsaw, Poland at the U20 World Championships in August. You can watch her post match interview here on Flowrestling. 

Sara Sterner received a bye in the first round of the 57 kg bracket before pinning Alyssa Ruiz of Texas in the second round. Sterner would fall to Cristelle Rodriguez of California  by a 10-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals before pinning Isabella Ngo of California in 55 seconds in the consolation fourth round. Sterner would fall in the consolation fifth round but would take home seventh place and All-American honors as she pinned Rose Kaplan of Indiana in 49 seconds. 

In the 59 kg weight class, Emma Grimm kicked off the tournament by pinning Alexandra Viera of New York in the first round before defeating Kylie Rule of Wisconsin by a narrow 12-10 decision. In the quarterfinals, Grimm would fall to Skye Realin of Hawaii but would bounce back with a 10-0 technical fall win over Oregon's Estella Gutches. Grimm would drop her next two matches and would secure an eighth place finish as well as All-American honors. 

After receiving a bye in the first round of the 68 kg bracket, London Houston only needed nine seconds to pin Zoey Smalley of Oregon to advance to the quarterfinals. Houston would dominate in her next match, defeating Ruby Rios by a 12-2 technical fall. In the semifinals, Houston would pick up another technical fall win, defeating Liv Wieber by a 10-0 technical fall to move into the championship bout. Houston would square off with University of Iowa Wrestler, Isabella Mir, in a best two out of three series. Houston would fall in back to back matches to take home second place and All-American honors. 

In the U23 Division, the CWC had seven wrestlers place in their respective weight classes including three third place finishes. 

Kendra Ryan kicked off the action at 50 kg and after receiving a first round bye, Ryan defeated teammate Angelina Graff by a 10-0 technical fall. The would head to the semifinals with a dominating 10-0 technical fall win over Emma Jones of Indiana. Ryan would take on five-time National Champion and three-time World Champion, Emily Shilson of Minnesota, in the semifinals and would fall to Shilson by a 12-1 technical fall. Looking to bounce back in the consolation semifinal, Ryan would fall to Kaelani Shufeldt of California by a 8-6 decision to fall into the fifth place match. Ryan would secure fifth place and All-American honors as she defeated Jones again by a technical fall. 

116-pound National Champion, Jaslynn Gallegos, only needed 29 seconds to win her first match of the tournament as she defeated Adacelli Salaiz-Noriega of Arizona in the 53 kg first round. In the quarterfinals, Gallegos picked up her second straight pin as she defeated Katherin Heath of Texas. Gallegos took on Estrella Dorado Marin of Colorado in the semifinals bout and would fall in a tightly contested match by a 8-6 decision to fall into the consolation side of the bracket. She took home sixth place and earned All-American honors. 

Salome Walker kicked off her tournament by pinning Alexandra Baudhin of North Dakota in the first round of the 59 kg bracket. In the quarterfinals bout, Walker would fall to Nichole Moore by a narrow 8-4 decision to fall into the consolation side of the bracket. Walker would bounce back with back-to-back technical fall wins over Izzy Clements of Utah and Ashley Whetzal of Missouri before pinning Lily Sherer of Pennsylvania to move into the third place match. In the third place bout, Walker would defeat Piper Cadden of Arizona by an 11-8 decision to take home third place and earn All-American honors. 

Yele Aycock, the 136-pound National Runner-up, kicked off the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Andrea Jones of Washington in the first round of the 62 kg bracket. Aycock picked up another 10-0 technical fall win in the quarterfinals, defeating Taylor Colangelo of Arizona. In the semifinals, Aycock would fall in a tightly contested match, falling to Marisol Nugent of Massachusetts 6-5. In the consolation semifinals, Aycock would defeat Louisa Schwab of California by a 9-1 decision before pinning Paige Wehrmeister of Missouri to earn third place and All-American honors.

Kendall Bostelman defeated Mia Crumb of Ohio by a 12-2 technical fall in the first round of the 65 kg weight class before falling to Grace Stem of Pennsylvania in the quarterfinals. Bostelman would bounce back with two straight pins over Danni Swihart of Michigan and Desinee Lopez of California to move into the consolation semifinals match. Bostelman would fall by a 14-2 technical fall to Viktorya Torres of Washington before taking home sixth place and earning All-American honors. 

Riley Aamold started the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Candice Corralejo of California in the first round of the 65 kg bracket. Aamold would fall in the quarterfinals before she picked up two technical fall wins over Makayla Munoz of New Mexico and Bridgette Sotomayor of Arizona to move into the consolation semifinals. Aamold would fall to Grace Stem of Pennsylvania and would take home sixth place, earning All-American honors. 

In the 68 kg weight class, Tiera Jimerson kicked off the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall win over Ferny Hernandez of Iowa before defeating Celina Cooke of Nevada by technical fall in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Jimerson would fall to Nina Maken of Minnesota by technical fall before bouncing back with her third technical fall of the tournament, defeating Aspen Barber of Colorado. In the third place match, Jimerson would defeat Anastasia Hardin of Kentucky by a 6-0 decision to take home third place and earn All-American honors. 


The Cardinals Wrestling Club (CWC) will return to the mat on April 27-30 as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the U.S Open.
