Denver Intends to Opt-In to New Landscape of Collegiate Athletics

The Pioneers have decided to opt-in under the proposed terms of the House v NCAA Settlement

DENVER – The University of Denver has made the decision to opt-in to the proposed terms of the House v NCAA Settlement, Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Ritchie Center Operations Josh Berlo announced on Wednesday.

"As the world of collegiate athletics continues to evolve and we begin to have clarity on the student athlete model of the future, the University of Denver has made the decision to opt-in to the new landscape of collegiate athletics under the proposed terms of the House v NCAA settlement," Berlo said. "Over the coming years, this will empower the University of Denver to provide additional support and infrastructure centered around student-athlete success. Opting in positions Denver Athletics for sustained broad-based competitive and academic excellence in furtherance of the University's mission while embodying DU's 4D Experience."

Denver Athletics is coming off a calendar year to remember in 2024, sending three teams to the national semifinals in an eight-month span. The Pioneers were one of seven athletic departments in the country to have made at least three national semifinals appearances last year with the other six all coming from Power 4 conferences.

In the 2023-24 academic year, the Pioneers finished as the top non-football school in the LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings for the 11th-straight year, and for the 15th time in the last 16 years. Denver finished third last season among athletic programs that are outside of the FBS, trailing only Harvard and Princeton. The Pioneers also finished ahead of 25 Power-5 programs in last year's standings. Denver finished 46th overall in the Directors' Cup standings, its best overall finish since finishing 35th in the 2016-17 athletic season.
