UIC to Provide Educational Awards to Men’s and Women’s Basketball Student-Athletes

CHICAGO – UIC Athletics announced Tuesday it will provide additional financial support to its men's and women's basketball student-athletes based on their academic achievement and progress towards graduation.

Starting in the 2023-24 academic year, UIC men's and women's basketball scholarship student-athletes will have the opportunity to receive up to $5,980 per year, the maximum amount allowed, based on eligibility criteria established by the Department of Athletics.

"We are pleased to provide this additional financial benefit to our basketball student-athletes in recognition of their continued academic achievement," said director of athletics Michael Lipitz. "This support enhances their student-athlete experience at UIC and furthers our investment in our flagship basketball programs."

The additional, education-related financial incentives were made possible as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Alston case in 2021. Each Missouri Valley Conference institution can determine its level of financial participation and establish its own criteria for the awards.

"I am so excited that our athletics department is making this financial commitment to our student-athletes," said men's basketball head coach Luke Yaklich. "This will further enhance their experience and distinguish us from many institutions when recruiting prospective student-athletes. We are very appreciative for this support."

"At UIC, we want to provide our student-athletes with the best opportunities on and off the court," said women's basketball head coach Ashleen Bracey. "This additional support will reward our student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom, while also providing them the financial freedom to take advantage of all that Chicago has to offer. This is another big step to elevate our program and position us to compete for championships."
