Eric Turner named Lasell University's first African American president
He's a longtime Newton resident, a proponent for connected learning, and now, Eric Turner is officially named Lasell University's 10th president.“That's what education is about, preparing students for the real world and giving them an opportunity to learn and continue their growth,” Turner said. Turner's new role follows a historic vote by the university's board of trustees confirming Turner as its first African American leader in the school's 172-year history.Turner has decades of experience both as a volunteer and employee of Lasell and is supported and admired by students.“He's such a great person overall, in general, and as president, I feel like he's going to greatly fill out this role,” said junior Yalines Medrano.“We're a very small, close-knit community, and I think Mr. Turner is somebody who understands what Lasell is about,” said junior Wil Berry. Turner has been associated with Lasell as it has evolved from becoming coeducational to incorporating Lasell Village and, most recently, a commitment to reducing tuition. Turner said he hopes to lead in a way that proves the value of a continued education.“We are educating people throughout the spectrum of life, and frankly, that's what we all should be about, is lifelong learning,” Turner said.Turner will replace outgoing President Michael Alexander, who spent 16 years at the helm. Turner assumes his role on July 1.
