Strategic plan will guide department through transition

DENTON, Texas – Vice President and Director of Athletics Jared Mosley unveiled Monday UNT Athletics' new TAKE FLIGHT strategic plan that will guide the department over the next five years including this summer's transition to the American Athletic Conference.

"This is an exciting time to be a part of UNT Athletics and the upcoming transition into the American Athletic Conference," Mosley said.  "I appreciate every one of our staff and constituents who participated in this process to help us identify the most strategic path forward to ensure the success of our student-athletes and ultimately each of our 16 sport programs.  We have a significant amount of momentum across our department and feel our commitment to our core values of people and their growth, integrity and success are cemented throughout this plan and will fuel our ability to TAKE FLIGHT in this new era of athletics here at UNT."

The department's mission statement of "Building Champions and Preparing Leaders through the pursuit of perfection in academics, athletics, and life" was a central focus throughout the planning and development stages of the new strategic plan.

The TAKE FLIGHT strategic plan has five priority areas:
  • Student-Athlete Experience
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Stewardship
  • Competitive Excellence and Championship Resources
  • Championship Culture and People
  • Revenue Generation

In January 2022, the University of North Texas initiated a review of its existing strategic plan for Intercollegiate Athletics.  College Sports Solutions (CSS) was engaged to assist with this review, and to also assist with the preparation of a revised plan, with particular focus on UNT's entry into the American Athletic Conference.

Initial interviews were conducted with head coaches, athletics administrative staff, university leadership, as well as donors, ticket holders, and community leaders, obtaining thoughts, ideas, and suggestions, with a goal of using that information as a foundation for the revised strategic plan.

In addition, research and benchmarking were performed to determine the width and breadth of the resources necessary to not only become a member of the American Athletic Conference, but to compete at the highest level of that new conference.

From that research, a benchmarking report was produced by CSS for use by UNT in formulating the revised plan.

Mosley is committed to continuing to update on progress to the strategic plan and maintaining a steadfast focus as collegiate athletics continues to evolve.
