Nona Borden elevated as head women's soccer coach at Eastern New Mexico

Director of athletics Kevin Fite names Nona Borden head coach for Greyhound women's soccer

PORTALES, N.M. – Eastern New Mexico Athletics is elevating Nona Borden as the head coach for ENMU women's soccer. Borden has served as the interim head coach since October 2024.

"I am ready to continue growing this program and am thankful for the trust that director of athletics Kevin Fite has in me," said Borden on being named the program's head coach. "I have high expectations for Greyhound women's soccer and am looking forward to building on what we have accomplished over the last couple of months."

Borden served as an assistant coach for the program from August to October before taking on the role of interim head coach. Two weeks after taking the program over, she led the team to a 2-0 victory over UT Permian Basin. The win marked the first time ENMU had beaten the Falcons since 2019.

Two Hounds earned all-LSC recognition last season. Rosie Willmott Joyce was named to the all-freshman team, and Sierra Villanueva was chosen as a member of the all-academic team.

"I am happy to announce Nona Borden as the new head women's soccer coach. Nona took on a challenge as the interim head coach in the fall and what I saw from the team was a raised level of effort and excitement," said director of athletics Kevin Fite. "As I watched her manage the team and the program since she took on the interim role, I felt she demonstrated the skills and knowledge to be successful as the head women's soccer coach at Eastern New Mexico University. She is going to raise the expectation of her players and the success of the program both in the classroom and on the field of competition."

Prior to her time in Portales, Borden served as a graduate assistant for internal operations at North Carolina Central University. She helped the department's business, compliance, and ticketing staff from August 2023 to May 2024. While at NCCU, she graduated summa cum laude with a master's in kinesiology and recreation administration.

Borden is no stranger to DII soccer. She was a four-year student-athlete at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

With the Braves, Borden played 63 games making 50 career starts. She helped the program win back-to-back Conference Carolinas tournament championships (2021, 2022), while reaching the NCAA Championships three times (2019, 2021, and 2022). Academically, Borden earned recognition from Conference Carolinas as Academic All-District team (2022), Academic All-Conference (2021), and Presidential Honor Roll (2021), and a nod on the Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction (2019).

At UNC-Pembroke, she completed her studies with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sport science.
